Cage Rage 23: Unbelievable on Sky Sports - TV Review

It’s a packed weekend for British mixed martial arts fans this weekend. With UFC 76 coming up, first it was off to Wembley Arena in London, with Sky Sports’ live coverage of Cage Rage 23: Unbelievable, featuring the MMA debut of former British Heavyweight boxing champion Julius Francis, as he went up against Gary “Smiler” Turner. As usual, Cage Rage supremos Andy Geer and Dave O’Donnell were on hand to guide us through the night’s events, with Malcolm Martin, Rob Nutley and Stephen Quadros handling duties at the announcer’s table.

UFC 75: Champion v Champion on Setanta Sports - TV Review

So I had a problem. UFC 75: Champion v Champion at the 02 Arena in London was being shown live not on pay-per-view, but on Setanta Sports’ regular channel. So, after deciding that I didn’t want to subscribe to a channel I’d only watch every once in a while when the UFC over here. So I put out a plea on forum, and a kind gentleman from Scotland agreed to record a copy for me. So, a little later than planned, The Two Sheds Review takes a look at the historic champion v champion match between UFC Light-Heavyweight king Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and his Pride counterpart Dan Henderson, as well as the return of Mirko Cro Cop. Our hosts for the show are Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan.

Straight Shootin' with Marc Mero - DVD Review

ECW/NWA World Title Tournament 1994 - DVD Review

In this edition of The Two Sheds Review, we’re going to take a trip back in time to 1994, to take a look at one of the most important events in the history of professional wrestling. A few weeks ago I was browsing the merchandise section of www.wrestlingepicenter.com, and I came across a DVD that captured my attention immediately - the NWA World Title Tournament from 1994. Having seen, heard and read a great deal about this tournament, I knew that I just had to get a copy of this.

WWE Summerslam 2007 on Sky Box Office - TV Review

It’s that time of the month again where I break out the old opening line as the three WWE brands band together for their monthly pay-per-view, and this time it’s been labelled the biggest part of the summer. Yep, it’s time for the twentieth instalment of Summerslam, shown here in Britain on Sky Box Office, and hosted by Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler from Raw, Michael Cole and JBL from Smackdown, and Joey Styles and Tazz from ECW.

UFC 74: Respect on Bravo - TV Review

Our hosts for the evening are Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan.

If you’re familiar with the Jack Nicholson film The Departed, which won four Oscars earlier this year, then by now you’ve already seen the Hong Kong film that inspired it, Infernal Affairs.

RQW Clacton March 2005 - DVD Review

This edition of The Two Sheds Review sees the debut of perhaps the most successful wrestling promotion in the UK at the moment, Real Quality Wrestling. Owned by Len Davies, RQW has quickly risen to the top of the tree thanks to sound business practices, good booking, and a weekly programme on TWC Fight which not only showcases their own shows, but matches from other promotions as well.

TNA Hard Justice 2007 on Bravo 2 - TV Review

When I heard that TNA had signed Pacman, and that he’d be appearing at Hard Justice, I had visions of follow-up signings that including Mario & Luigi and Sonic the Hedgehog. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as Pacman is in fact an American footballer called Adam Jones, a guy who I’ve never heard of and has apparently been suspended from the forthcoming NFL season. So do I care? No. But before I go off on a tangent, it’s time to take a look at the 2007 version of Hard Justice, held in the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida, and shown on a three day delay on Bravo 2 here in Britain. Our hosts for the evening are, as usual, Mike Tenay and Don West.

Marco Ruas: Brazilian Vale Tudo - DVD Review

When the bods at MMA Universe asked me to review another instructional DVD, I have to admit that I was somewhat reticent about their request. After all, I’m never likely to become a fighter in any kind of sport, so why should I review these kind of DVDs? So it was with these thoughts going through my mind that I began to watch a fighting legend in action in Marco Ruas - Brazilian Vale Tudo.

UFC 73: Stacked on Bravo - TV Review

Dana White has described this as being the best fight card not just in MMA history, but in the history of combat sports. Is he correct? That’s what we’re going to attempt to find out by looking at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Stacked, shown on twenty-four hour delay here in Britain on Bravo, and hosted by UFC regulars Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan.

WWE Vengeance: Night of Champions on Sky Sports - TV Review

WWE Vengeance: Night of Champions was meant to be one of the stand-out events on the WWE calendar. A chance to see every title defended on one show. A chance to see all the champions under the same roof. But sadly, events that took place elsewhere will always overshadow this event. Nevertheless, as the old saying goes the show must go on, and here’s my review of the show.

TNA Slammiversary 2007 on Bravo 2 - TV Review

Has it really been five long years since Total Non-Stop Action made their debut with their weekly pay-per-views? Five years since we saw the likes of Low-Ki, A.J. Styles, America’s Most Wanted, and The Flying Elvises on the national stage? Part of me still misses those old weekly shows, but as with everything else in the world, we have to move on. Which is why I’m watching TNA’s latest pay-per-view offering, Slammiversary, this time taking place back in TNA’s old stomping ground in Nashville, and shown on a three day delay here in Britain on Bravo 2. As usual, our hosts for the evening are Don West and Mike Tenay.

UFC 72: Victory on Setanta - TV Review

You know something? That Dana White guy must really like coming over to Britain, otherwise he wouldn’t have given us two UFC shows in very quick succession. So, following their success at the MEN Arena in Manchester, they’ve come back again, this time to the Odyssey Arena in Belfast with UFC 72: Victory, featuring the likes of Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami and Forrest Griffin, shown live on pay-per-view on the Setanta Sports PPV channel. So is it as good as everyone says it is? This is what this writer wants to find out.

UFC 71: Lidell v Jackson on Bravo - TV Review

Chuck Lidell has been beaten three times in his career. Having avenged two of those losses, Lidell wanted revenge against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, while Jackson wanted Lidell’s UFC Light-Heavyweight title. Thus the main event was made for UFC 71: Lidell v Jackson, shown on a twenty-four hour delay here in Britain on Bravo. Our hosts for the evening are Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan.

Chuck Lidell: Hybrid Freestyle - DVD Review

When the good people at MMA Universe asked me to review the Chuck Lidell: Hybrid Freestyle instructional box set, I have to admit I was a little reticent. Although I am a keen follower of the MMA scene, I have no intention of ever training to become an MMA fighter. So why would I want to watch a DVD set that showed me how to become a fighter?

The Kingdom of Ultimate Power - Film Review

So what do you get when you cross a group of New York film makers with a mixed martial arts legend? The answer is simple - Bas Rutten hamming it up in “The Kingdom of Ultimate Power”.

See No Evil - Film Review

I had resisted the temptation for a long time. Having outgrown my love of slasher movies many years ago, I originally had no intention of buying this thing. But finally, I succumbed to the temptation, and purchased a copy of Kane’s film debut, See No Evil.

Inside the Mind of Gene Roddenberry - Book Review

Gene Roddenberry is one of the reasons I became a writer. The rich mythology that is the Star Trek universe that he created over forty years ago captured my imagination when I was a child, and has kept me enthralled ever since.

The Return & Trial of the Incredible Hulk - Film Review

Those of us of a certain age will remember the original Incredible Hulk television series, starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, which ran from 1977-1982. Although there were drastic differences between the comic and the show, it was still a tremendous hit, and this writer has many fond memories of watching this show during my mis-spent youth.

UFC 70: Nations Collide on Setanta - TV Review

It’s been five years since the Ultimate Fighting Championship held a show in Great Britain, and quite a lot has changed since then, including the British public’s perception of the sport of mixed martial arts, which meant quite a bit was expected from UFC 70: Nations Collide, held at the Manchester Evening News Arena and broadcast live on pay-per-view in Britain on Setanta.

Well, that’s what we’re here for as we take another trip down under with a look at Greystoke Entertainment’s Wrestlerock 3.

Ju-On: The Grudge 2 - DVD Review

It was Hideo Nakata’s Ringu that first turned me on to the fine art that is the Japanese horror film. It was Nakata’s fault that I later watched Ju-On: The Grudge and it’s slightly inferior American re-make. It’s also Nakata’s fault that I brought Ju-On: The Grudge 2, in the hope that it would be just as compelling as the first film.

Directed by Takashi Shimizu, the story once again centres around the events that took place in the house in the original film, only this time the visitors are from the world of television. The crew of Heart-Stopping Backgrounds visit the house, ala Most Haunted, in an attempt to find out if the house is haunted. And to add a little spice to the proceedings, actress Harase Kyoko, dubbed the “Horror Queen” by the media, is invited along as a special guest.

If you’ve seen the first film, I think you can probably guess what happens next. Those who entered the house and those connected in some way to those who entered the house start to die.

And that’s the main problem with this film. Although, like most Japanese horror films these days, it’s incredibly well shot and incredibly well directed, I couldn’t help but think that I’d seen it all before in the first instalment. There were hardly any big surprises here, except for the ending which I won’t spoil for you just in case you haven’t seen it yet.

After watching this film in the darkness of my bedroom, I didn’t feel surprised, and I didn’t feel in the least bit scared. And I also didn’t feel in the least bit compelled to go and see the third instalment when it’s finally released.

As far as this film goes, as the great sage that is Abraham J. Simpson once said, I’ve coughed up scarier things.

Phil Cool, Pavillion Theatre, Cromer, April 2007 - Show Review

I must have been about 15 years old when I first saw Phil Cool. It was late on a Friday night as I was channel surfing through the four meagre channels we had at the time. With his impressions and his ability to change his face into almost any shape possible, I was hooked from the word go.

UFC 69: Shootout on Bravo - TV Review

It’s a busy time for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in April, as they began their pay-per-view schedule with UFC 69: Shootout, headlined by Georges St. Pierre defending his welterweight title against Matt Serra. As usual, our hosts for the show are Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan.

Ultimate Avengers II: Rise of the Panther - DVD Review

They’re back! And this time they’re kicking alien ass in a foreign country. Okay, I know this opening tag line sounds really corny, but I couldn’t think of a better way of introducing a DVD review of Ultimate Avengers II: Rise of the Panther.

FWA Academy Supercard III - DVD Review

Another first for The Two Sheds Review….well….kind of, as we take a look at the Frontier Wrestling Alliance Academy, an off-shoot of the now defunct Frontier Wrestling Alliance here in Britain, who, until recently, held regular shows in Portsmouth on the south coast of England. The show we’re going to look at here is Supercard III, filmed in April 2006, and headlined by a non-title bout between FWA British Champion Hade Vansen and FWA Academy Champion Dan Head, with the winner getting a shot at the loser’s title.

It’s that time of the year again as World Wrestling Entertainment present their biggest show of the year in front of 80,000-plus fans at Ford Field in Detroit. Yep, it’s the twenty-third instalment of Wrestlemania.

Casino Royale - DVD Review

When Daniel Craig was unveiled as the successor to Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond, I couldn’t believe the outrage around the world. There were letter writing campaigns, anti-Craig websites were set up, and I dare say a few hate letters were sent to various people. The reason why? Not because Craig was a bad actor, but because he was blonde!

WWF Wrestlemania 2 - Retro Review

As we build up to the biggest wrestling show of the year, WWE Wrestlemania 23, I thought I’d keep up a tradition by reviewing a past Wrestlemania, this time the only Wrestlemania I’ve never seen - Wrestlemania 2, held in three different cities across America in 1986.

When comedian Peter Kay heard that someone was writing a biography about him, he thought that he’d beat them to it and write it himself. After all, who knows Peter Kay better than the man himself? Well, perhaps his mum.

NWF Summer Sizzler Extravaganze - DVD Review

A few months ago I reviewed a couple of DVDs from the National Wrestling Federation (NWF), a promotion run by kids in the 1980’s that gained national television exposure in the United States via public access television. This edition of The Two Sheds Review is going to take a look at the second DVD in their Anoka Armoury series, Summer Sizzler Extravaganza, held way back in July 1986.

A Tribute to Queen: The Essential Collection - CD Review

So I’m walking through my local Woolworths shop, hoping to buy the latest Japanese horror film The Host, a cross between Jaws and Jurassic Park, or so the television advert told me. When I found out that they were out of stock, I thought sod it, and brought The Prestige, a tale of two feuding magicians, instead.

TNA Destination X on Bravo 2 - TV Review

Because I can’t think of another tag line at the moment, it’s that time of the month again where we take another trip down to the Impact Zone down in Florida for Total Non-Stop Action’s latest pay-per-view offering, Destination X, headlined by Samoa Joe challenging Christian Cage for the NWA World title and shown three days later in Britain on Bravo 2. Clerks II, Children of Men & Right at your Door -DVD Reviews

WBC Muay Thai Time for Deliverance 5 on Sky Sports - TV Review

This past Saturday, February 25th, saw the latest World Boxing Council Muay Thai show, Time for Deliverance 5, at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, and as I’m starting to get into various forms of combat sports these days, I thought I’d give the show the old Two Sheds Review treatment with a review of Sky Sports coverage, broadcast four days later.

IPW: UK Extreme Measures 2 - DVD Review

Over the last couple of years I’ve heard a lot about Daniel Edler’s International Pro Wrestling: UK promotion. Since their inception, they’ve had shows broadcast on TWC Fight, have gained quite a reputation for solid shows amongst the British wrestling faithful, and are, from what I hear, currently embroiled in an inter-promotional war with the once mighty Frontier Wrestling Alliance. But the thing is, even though I’ve got some of their DVDs, I’ve never actually watched one of their shows. Well, today I’m going to rectify this, as we take a look at their Extreme Measures 2 show, held in August 2005. Our host for the evening is Rob Lansdowne.

Sporting Supermen - Book Review

Growing up I was always a big comics fan, and although I mainly enjoyed the adventures of Superman and Spider-Man, there were times when I ventured into other pastures, taking in such comics as Tiger and Roy of the Rovers. Which is why Brendan Gallagher’s Sporting Superman book appealed to me.

Vince Russo Shoot Interview - DVD Review

He is regarded as one of the most controversial men in the history of professional wrestling. He’s credited with saving the WWF from the brink of bankruptcy, and sending WCW to the brink of bankruptcy. Now back in the wrestling business writing for TNA, I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at RF Video’s Vince Russo Shoot Interview.

On the eve of the 2007 Royal Rumble, I thought it would be apt to take a look back at the first Royal Rumble to have been broadcast in pay-per-view way back in 1989. (The first ever Royal Rumble was actually the year before, but was shown on the USA Network.) Our hosts at The Summit in Houston, Texas, are the legendary commentary team of the late Gorilla Monsoon and future politician Jesse “The Body” Ventura.

Are Norwich Worthy Anymore?

Sunday afternoon, October 1st. Norwich City are playing Burnley at their Carrow Road home in their first live televised game of the season. Veteran new-signing Dion Dublin is making his home debut, nearly twenty years after being released by the club as a trainee.

A Day at Carrow Road

It’s 11am in the morning. The weather is terrible. It’s cold, and it’s raining, which is quite a change from the severely hot weather Britain has had to put up with in the past couple of months. I’m sitting in the City Stand at Carrow Road, the home of Norwich City, for the first time in twenty years. Around me are men of various ages and sizes. Why am I here? Because I want a job.

Two years ago The Wrestling Channel were in need of footage for a new show, designed to promote British wrestling and wrestlers, most notably those who weren’t featured on the weekly Frontier Wrestling Alliance show. When the FWA’s TV show went on hiatus towards the end of the 2004, UK Round-Up was born, hosted by Powerslam writer Mo Chatra, and with “Hardcore” John Atkins and “Charming” Don Charles handling commentary duties. But did the show achieve what it set out to do? Let’s look back at the matches and the overall content of the series.

With just over a week to go until The Great American Bash, World Wrestling Entertainment presented their second Saturday Night’s Main Event of the year from Dallas, broadcast live on NBC in the States and Sky Sports here in Britain. Wanderlai, Chuck & Bob

The past few days in the mixed martial arts world have certainly been interesting to say the least, especially in the lives of three of the sport’s biggest stars.

UFC 61: Bitter Rivals on Bravo - TV Review

It’s not often that we see a true rivalry in “real” fight sports these days. We wrestling fans are more than used to the scripted rivalries that we’ve seen/ But when you put Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz together, you know that you’re going to get a shoot in more ways than one. Couple that with a World Heavyweight title fight, and you’ve got UFC 61: Bitter Rivals, broadcast on British TV station Bravo on a two day delay, with our hosts, Mike Goldberg and the legendary Randy Coutoure.

For this review I’m taking a journey into parts unknown. Wrestling Madness: The Best of British - DVD Review

Originally released over a decade ago on video, Wrestling Madness has found it’s way onto DVD, thanks to Fastforward Music. It features matches from the Reslo show, which was originally broadcast on Welsh television station S4C in the eighties and nineties, as well as action from Otto Wanz’s Catch Wrestling Alliance. But is this release as good now as it was then? Our host for the show is boxing commentator Reg Gutteridge, and our commentator is Lee Bamber, known mainly for his work as All-Star’s master of ceremonies.

Mick Foley's Greatest Hits & Misses - DVD Review

To say that Mick Foley is one of the most popular wrestlers of all time wouldn’t be an understatement, and two years ago, the WWE paid tribute to Foley’s career by letting him pick some of his favourite matches for this two disc compilation, Mick Foley’s Greatest Hits & Misses. Hosted by the man himself, it takes in matches from WCW, ECW, SMW, and, of course, WWE.

MLW Genesis - DVD Review

When The Wrestling Channel began broadcasting just over two years ago, for me one of the highlights then was Court Bauer’s Major League Wrestling. Indeed, MLW was the first promotion featured in TWC’s popular Supercard Sunday slot. But it’s not that particular show we’re going to look at here. That honour goes to MLW’s very first show, Genesis, held at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, with a tournament to crown the very first MLW World Champion.

Cage Rage on Sky Sports - TV Review

This is the first time I’ve paid any attention to Cage Rage, regarded by many as Britain’s leading mixed martial arts promotion. With regular broadcasts on Sky Sports, the thing that has always put me off is the fact that they only show highlights in their sixty minute slot. But seeing as I’m really getting into MMA at the moment, I thought I might as well give them a look-see.

GWF Brutes, Bumps & Bandages - DVD Review

In the early 1990’s a new wrestling promotion burst onto the scene, promising great things, including connections with wrestling promotions around the world. TNA Lockdown 2006 on TWC - TV Review

Unlike other TNA pay-per-views, I’m always somewhat reticent about watching Lockdown. The concept that every bout is held within the confines of a steel cage seems lacking in imagination, but seeing as this is being shown free on The Wrestling Channel, I thought what the hell, and give the show a look!

CZW Point of No Return on TWC - TV Review

I’ve never really been a fan of Combat Zone Wrestling. With a few exceptions their style of wrestling just doesn’t appeal to me. But seeing as The Wrestling Channel here in Britain have now given them their own regular Supercard Sunday slot, I thought what the hell, I might as well add Point of No Return to my ever growing list of reviews.

WWE Wrestlemania 22 - PPV Review

It’s that time of the year again, as World Wrestling Entertainment pulls out all the stops for their annual Wrestlemania spectacular, this year coming from the windy city, Chicago.

Forever Hardcore - DVD Review

While The Rise & Fall of ECW may have gone on to become one of the WWE’s biggest selling DVDs, several major players were missing from that release, as the likes of Joey Styles, Todd Gordon, Shane Douglas, Raven and more never got the chance to tell their side of the stories, mainly because they weren’t under contract to Vince McMahon.

WWF Wrestlemania 1 - Retro Review

With the biggest wrestling show of the year just a week away, I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at where it all began, back to Madison Square Garden in 1985, and the first ever Wrestlemania. But I’m always willing to give wrestling promotions a second chance to impress me. So here goes.
