WCL Season 2 Episodes 1-4 - DVD Review

It’s debut time in The Two Sheds Review as we take a look at the World Combat League. Founded in 2005 by film star Chuck Norris, the WCL is a full contact striking competition, incorporating styles from boxing, muay thai, kick boxing, karate and tae kwon do, and like MMA’s M-1 Challenge it’s a team event. But perhaps the most interesting part is that all fights are contested in what the fans call “the pit”, a no ring circle.

With Eurosport continually failing to supply my regular fix of K-1 kickboxing action, I’ve once again decided to turn to a DVD release, courtesy of MMA Universe. So in this review we’ll be going back in time to 2007, and the K-1 World GP 2007 in Seoul: The Final 16, with sixteen men, among the likes of “Sugarfoot” Ray Sefo, “The Dutch Lumberjack” Peter Aerts, Semmy Schilt and the giant Hong Man Choi looking to move on to the final eight in Tokyo.

My first review of 2009 sees us taking another trip to the world of K-1, as I take a look at British Eurosport’s end of year coverage of the K-1 Grand Prix final from Yokohama, Japan, with a new generation of fighters coming through to battle the old guard, and a very controversial end to the final. Will Vanders is, as always, there to provide commentary, and sadly, I’m having to start this review with some more criticism of Eurosport’s K-1 coverage.

No, it’s not Pride/K-1 Shockwave 2002, it’s four years later than that, as we’re going to take a look at the DVD release of the K-1 Premium Dynamite 2006, featuring some of the greats of the MMA and K-1 worlds, such as Kazushi Sakuraba, Genki Sudo, Semmy Schilt, Musashi and a whole lot more.

With Eurosport still failing to satisfy the needs of it’s K-1 and MMA fans, I’ve decided to take another look back at a past K-1 show. However, this time I won’t be reviewing a show I recorded off the television, this time I’ll be reviewing a DVD, the release of the K-1 World GP Final 2006, featuring the final eight man tournament to find the World GP Champion. The commentators for this one are Michael Schiavello and Mike Bernardo, so at least I won’t be getting constant comparisons between Pepsi and holy wine.

WKN Night of Champions 2006 - Retro Review

This edition of The Two Sheds Review sees us taking a look at the world of kickboxing, as seeing as how Eurosport continue to ignore we kickboxing and MMA fans after having served us for so well for so many years, I’m dipping into my own personal archive (translation - I taped it off the TV) to look at the World Kickboxing Network “Night of Champions” show, held in the Palais des Sports in Marseille, France, and broadcast on Eurosport in December 2006.

Our commentator for the evening is Will Vanders, which means there’ll be plenty of comparisons between Pepsi and holy wine, as well as countless other “Vanderisms”. But that’s just something I’m going to have to put up with.

WBC Muay Thai Time for Deliverance 5 on Sky Sports - TV Review

This past Saturday, February 25^th, saw the latest World Boxing Council Muay Thai show, Time for Deliverance 5, at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, and as I’m starting to get into various forms of combat sports these days, I thought I’d give the show the old Two Sheds Review treatment with a review of Sky Sports coverage, broadcast four days later.

K-1 Asian Grand Prix, Seoul, South Korea 2005 - TV Review

As part of their Fight Club series Eurosport continued their coverage of the Japanese mixed martial arts K-1 promotion with coverage of their Asian Grand Prix event in Seoul, South Korea this past March. The coverage centered on the Grand Prix tournament itself, and sadly the other matches were edited out of the show. However, this didn't spoil my enjoyment of this show.
