The Two Sheds Mix Tape 28: 21st Century Purple

Over the past few months I’ve showcased the different eras of the greatest band in modern music history, the band that stands on the same level as the likes of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin as far as influencing hard rock and heavy metal are concerned.

Despite a whole horde of ups and downs and an eight year hiatus Deep Purple are still going strong today. They may all be in their seventies now but the 21st century has been very kind to them, and they were finally inducted into the Rock ’N’ Roll Hall of Fame, and they’re latest album, Whoosh!, shows that they’re still capable of rocking with the best of them.

The only downside to this was the sad death of original keyboard player Jon Lord in 2012. Lord had retired from Purple life ten years before, his place having been taken by Don Airey, whose first album with the band was 2003’s Bananas.

So what we have here is a collection of sixteen tracks recorded by a group of men moving from their fifties to their seventies. These songs may not be as well known as those from their 1970’s hey day, but they’re still pretty memorable. To paraphrase singer Ian Gillan, they’re a great example of where the band where at those moments in time.

Here’s the full track listing:

1) House of Pain
2) Throw My Bones
3) Weirdistan
4) Don’t Let Go
5) Out of Hand
6) Birds of Prey
7) Clearly Quite Absurd
8) No Need to Shout
9) The Surprising
10) Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
11) Doing It Tonight
12) Get Me Outta Here
13) Girls Like That
14) Above Beyond
15) Bananas
16) And the Address
