Back in Time: Civil War II Chapter Thirty-Three

“That should do it, Doctor,” said Scotty. “Energy levels in the cavourite drive are back to normal.”

“Thank you, Scotty,” said Magus.

The wizard then walked over to the main engineering console and accessed the computer. He soon found the program he was looking for, a program he had installed with the help and the blessings of the Time Lords.

Soon, Magus returned to the Bridge and seated himself in the pilot's chair. Accessing the program, he set a course, not for a destination in space, but for a place and a point in time: Stallion's Gate, New Mexico, year 2000.

The control room was quiet. Daniel Reid had returned to England, and Doctor Alessi and Al Calevicchi sat in silent thought, both of them wondering how they would get Sam Beckett back.

The only thing that broke their chain of thought was a strange energy burst that suddenly appeared before them. They could see that someone was arriving, beaming into the project. Soon, Magus stood before them, a body in his arms, covered with a drape.

Magus looked into the eyes of Donna. This was perhaps the hardest thing he ever had to do. He had made a promise to her and was unable to keep it.

“Donna, I'm so sorry.”

It was all Magus had to say. Laying Beckett's body to the ground, Donna crouched over it and broke down. Al, too, was in tears. The man they loved more than anything else in this cruel world was gone, killed four hundred years ahead of his time.

Normally military heroes were buried at Arlington, but on this occasion the President had made an exception. Doctor Samuel Beckett was one of America's foremost scientific minds, and to many, he was a hero. It was only fitting that he was given a hero's send-off.

Dignitaries from all over the world attended. At the behest of Donna Alessi, the pallbearers had included Daniel Reid and James Watt. Phineas Magus also attended.

From afar, another Magus, the 24th century Magus, watched. Next to him stood Captain Pendragon.

“We really must be going, Doctor,” said Pendragon. “There's already been reports of a U.F.O. sighting. If we stay much longer, we could contaminate this time-line.”

Magus turned to Pendragon and smiled slightly. He knew he was right. Nodding to Pendragon, he told him it was time to go. Pendragon activated his communicator.

“Pendragon to Scotsman. Two to beam up.”

And soon they were gone, back to their own time. As they moved through the years back to the 24th century, Magus still had that feeling, a feeling of failure. However, deep down inside he knew that all was not lost.
