Future Tense - Chapter One

The mid-21st century. The war with the machines had been going on for years, all over the world, including the ruined and almost dead city of London.
Many people in the various resistance movements speculated on how, or why, this war happened. Many say it was because mutants were outlawed, and many say that the super-powered beings could have stopped this way. Perhaps they could have, but that will never be known. And to two young mutants currently walking through the streets of dead London that was the last thing on their minds. Their first priority was survival.
The young man, Peter Watt, is also known as Super Nova, because of his mutant power, inherited from his father and mother. The young woman is known only as Clone.
Slowly they walked through the deserted streets looking for anything, any piece of machinery they could use. Nova suddenly stopped and picked up a small piece of metal. He called over to Clone.
    “How about this?”
Clone walked over to him and looked at what Nova held.
“It’s useless.” she said. “Too rusty!”
Suddenly two laser blasts shot over their heads. They looked back to see two T1000 droids approaching them, firing their blasters.
    “I’ll handle them!” said Nova.
“No. We’ve got to get out of here!”
Clone then grabbed Nova by the arm and pulled him out of the way as they started to run down the street. The Terminators continued to follow them. Then they turned a corner and they thought they had got away from them when they found two more Terminators standing in front of them. Nova raised his hand but his blast just went straight through them. He followed up with another blast but this had the same effect. Clone was about to replicate herself when she found herself grabbed around the throat by one of the machines. It looked as if they were heading for defeat.
Then, suddenly, one of the androids was hoisted up into the air and thrown away as if it was yesterday’s rubbish. Then another was smashed into hundreds of pieces by a mighty fist. The final two were thrown into each other causing them to explode.
Stunned and kneeling on the ground Nova looked up to see the man who had saved them. He smiled as he saw his father, James Watt, holding out his hand. He helped Nova to his feet and then did the same with Clone soon afterwards.
“Come on.” he said. “We’d better get out of there. This place will be full of Terminators soon.”
Suddenly more energy blasts rained in over their heads.
“Looks like you spoke too soon.” said Clone.
Then two blasts knocked Nova and Clone out of action. Watt looked up and he expected to see some more Terminators. He was wrong.
    “Space Ghost!”
Before he could do anything Space Ghost pressed a button on his power bands, and Watt was hit by a massive burst of energy. He didn’t stand a chance.

Slowly Watt began to come to. He did not know how long he had been unconscious. What he did know was that he could not move. He looked around. He appeared to be in some sort of restraining cabinet. He looked to his left and he saw that Nova and Clone were in similar cabinets. Then he looked towards his feet and he could see Space Ghost sitting at a control panel. He was obviously in Space Ghost’s shuttle Space Ghost looked around at Watt and smiled.
“I see you’re beginning to come around. Good. The machines will see what prize I have for them.”
“Why are you doing this? Working for the machines? You weren’t like this before when we fought the Black Squadron or the Galactic Empire, when Magus and Gandalf took you to my time.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” said Space Ghost. “I’ve never met you before.”
“But why are you doing this? You know what happened to mutants, and others like the immortals. You’re one of us!”
“When my ship crashed on this world years ago the machines offered e the technology to repair it. But the only way I could get that technology was by working for them. Now my contract is almost completed. Soon I’ll be off this planet and back on my own Ghost Planet.”
The shuttle suddenly came to a halt. They had arrived at the headquarters of the machines. Space Ghost opened the hatch and got out of the shuttle. A Terminator then approached him. Space Ghost reached into his belt and took out a small card. He handed it to the Terminator. The robot used his internal computer to scan the card. He then handed it back to Space Ghost. Two more robots then emerged from the building and began to unload the bounty from the shuttle. They started to take them into the building. Then Space Ghost turned to one of the machines.
“When am I going to get the equipment?” he asked.
The Terminator stared coldly at him.
“You will not. Your contract with us has been terminated, as will you.”
The Terminator then drew a blaster and was about to fire it at Space Ghost when he ducked out of the way, firing a blast of his own at the machine, damaging it. Energy blasts flew all over the place, and several damaged the restraining cabinets. Watt then made sure Nova and Clone were alright.
“You two had better get out of here.” he said.
    “Not without you.”
    “Go!”
Upon hearing Watt shout Nova and Clone ran away as fast as they could. Then Watt turned his attention to the Terminators. One tried to punch him but Watt altered his density so he was as hard as diamond. The robot’s hand shattered on impact. Another tried to fire it’s blaster but Watt quickly dodged out of the way. During this battle he could see that Space Ghost was having some trouble. Realising he had to help him he grabbed Space Ghost by the arm and dragged him out of the way. They then took to the sky, with Watt holding on to Space Ghost as he flew as fast as he could.
    “Why are you saving me?”
“I’m just protecting my past interests.” said Watt. “You told me about them a few minutes ago.”

It was ten minutes later when Watt and Space Ghost landed. Watt began to look around, trying to get his bearings.
“I’d like to thank you.” said Space Ghost. “You saved my life back there.”
“I would have done the same for anyone else.” said Watt.
    “Where are we?”
“If I’m right.” said Watt. “This is Baker Street, where I want to be.”
“Baker Street? As in Sherlock Holmes?”
“Yes, there’s something I want you to see.”
Space Ghost followed Watt down the street. They soon came to a grassy clearing. The wind swirled around the. It was bitterly cold.
“What is this place?” asked Space Ghost.
“A cemetery.” Watt replied. “It’s where the mutants and others with super-powers were buried during the first years of the war. Step forward, look at the names on the headstones.”
Space Ghost stepped forward and kneeled down to look at the names. First there was White Knight, then Prince Poseidon, Birdman, Lightning Man, and one for Watt’s wife, Red Sun.
“These people, they were all members of Anglo-Force.” said Space Ghost.
“And they died protecting a cause they all believed in.” said Watt. “Even after Anglo-Force was outlawed they continued to protect the innocent, even though the innocent no longer trusted us. Come with me. There’s an old warehouse near here. We should be safe there.”
They soon found the warehouse. Watt managed to force the rusty door open. They were soon in a dark corridor.
“What is this place?” asked Space Ghost.
“An old friend lives here.” replied Watt. “He has an idea on how we can stop this from happening.”
They soon saw a light up ahead. Watt opened the door and they soon entered a shabby-looking lab.
“Daniel, are you here?” Watt called.
They then heard footsteps as an old man wearing a shabby-looking white coat stepped out in front of them. Space Ghost couldn’t believe it.
“Daniel Reid? Doctor Daniel Reid? I thought you were dead!”
“So do the machines. It was a rumour we put around to stop them from looking for this place. If they found it all would be lost.”
“Do you have any water?” asked Watt.
“In the next room, and there’s not much so don’t drink it all.”
Watt then left Reid and Space Ghost alone.
“Watt said he’d met me before.” said Space Ghost. “But today is the first time I’ve met hi. Could he be mistaken?”
“No.” said Reid. “In fact I’ve met you before but you haven’t met me yet.”
Watt then re-entered the room, drying his face.
“Did Phineas bring the machine?” he asked.
“He brought it in yesterday.” Reid replied. “He couldn’t stay long. He had to return to the Time of Legends.”
Reid then walked over to a large cover and pulled the cover off. Once again Space Ghost could not believe his eyes.
“Don’t ask.” said Reid. “It is one of the machines’ time machines. Magus led a raid that captured this machine. With it we are going to try to alter the past so none of this ever happened.”
“How can you do that?” asked Space Ghost.
“As I told you, the mutants and super-heroes could have stopped this war but we were outlawed.” said Watt. “That first step was taken in 2001 when a bill was introduced in parliament outlawing us and officially disbanding Anglo-Force. But a few months before the Home Secretary Simon Kennedy tried to stop the bill before it reached that stage. Not long afterwards he was assassinated. Within two years hundreds of us were rounded up and put in Dentonville. Several other countries followed suit, and soon this thing was worldwide. Then the war happened. Skynet went berserk and there was this big bang. Since then we’ve been fighting the machines but with little  success, until now.”
Reid walked over to a table and picked up an armband.
“You’re going back to change history, aren’t you?” said Space Ghost.
“I don’t see any other volunteers.” said Watt, putting on the armband.
“Are you sure you’re the right one?” said Reid. “Considering who the assassin is?”
“In 1999 I made a vow that I would try to stop this from happening. I couldn’t then so I will now, and with Peter and Clone missing I’ the only logical choice. I have to stop Kennedy’s assassination.”
    “I’ll go!” said Space Ghost.
“You can’t!” said Watt. “You haven’t been briefed, and you don’t know that time!”
“Perhaps our friend here would be a better choice.” said Reid.
Then Reid looked over at his computer as a beeping noise sounded.
    “What is it?” asked Watt.
“We’ll have company soon.” said Reid. “Give hi the armband.”
Reid took the armband off Watt and gave it to Space Ghost.
    “Put this on!”
As Space Ghost put the armband on Reid walked over to his table and picked up something that looked like a digital watch.
“This is a small computer which will tell you about the mission and who to contact. The armband must be worn at all times. If you take it off you will be rippled back to this time. Now step into the machine.”
Space Ghost stepped into the time machine as Reid walked over to the control panel. He began to energise the machine just as the whole building began to shake.
“The Terminators are here!” said Watt. “At least ten of them!”
Watt looked around to see Space Ghost in the machine.
    “Good luck Space Ghost!”
Then the whole wall began to crumble as the Terminators began to enter the building.
“Hurry!” said Watt. “Send him back!”
Reid threw the switch and the process was complete. Then the machines attacked Reid and Watt, drawing them away as a T1000 got near the time machine as another went near the control panel. Reid and Watt could do nothing to prevent the machines from operating the time machine and sending a T1000 back to the year 2000.
