Back in Time: Civil War II Chapter Twenty-Five

Stallion's Gate, New Mexico, 2000

They were there. As the Anglo-Force sky-jet flew over Stallion's Gate, Reid looked down at the place that had been his home for two years. When Sam Beckett had first put forward the idea of housing Project Quantum Leap inside a mountain, Reid laughed at the idea. In hindsight, he had found it to be the perfect choice.

The sky-jet soon landed in the main hangar, where they were greeted by Al Calevicchi. He gave Alessi a warm hug. Gushie was also there, and after the introductions, they were filled in.

"The link is getting weaker," Al said. "Ziggy is only just about keeping tabs on Sam."

"Does she know what's wrong, though?" asked Reid.

"The temporal energy has decreased with each leap," said Al. "Now it's almost down to zero."

"Perhaps if I can re-establish contact with Sam's neurons, the energy will increase, perhaps with the next leap," said Reid.

"It's possible," said Alessi. "But if there isn't enough energy how can he leap?"

"I'm still trying to work out how to get that energy to him," said Reid. "Come on. We haven't got much time."

New York State, 2000

America never had been one of Magus' favorite places on Earth. He had often said it was wasted on the Americans. Now he had to be here, if he was ever going to stop Admiral Thrawn's plan. He could now see the east coast of America in the distance, and along with it he could see something that did not belong in this time: an Imperial transport, and a lone figure trying to repair it.

The element of surprise was on Magus' side, and he decided to use it. Landing nearby, he crept up on the man.

"Excuse me, sir, can you show me the way? I appear to be lost?"

The man almost jumped out of his skin. Clutching his chest, as if he was having a heart attack, he looked at Magus.

"Who are you? How did you get here?"

"The same way as you, my dear fellow. Now please tell me, where is your blue-skinned commanding officer? He won't find any other Socratians on Earth in this time period."

"I'd rather die before talking to you."

"It would be impossible for you to talk after you've died, sir, unless you are one of the immortals that inhabit this world."

Magus stepped forward and placed his hand on the man's head. There was a glow as Magus took the information he wanted direct from the Imperial's mind. He then moved his hand away, and smiled.

"Thank you, sir, for your cooperation. Now, perhaps you feel a little tired."

The man yawned, and soon began to slump. Magus used his powers to make his descent to the ground more comfortable.

With the information at hand, Magus continued on his journey.

Project Quantum Leap, Stallion's Gate, New Mexico, 2000

It had been a long time, and for some strange reason Reid was glad to be back in the main control room of Project Quantum Leap. It had radically changed since his last visit here years ago, but some things never changed. In the center of the room stood what could only be termed as the super-computer, which Sam Beckett had named Ziggy.

"It's good to see you again, Doctor Reid," Ziggy said. "It's been a long time."

"It's good to see you as well, Ziggy," Reid replied. "You're different from the last time I saw you. Have you done something with your hair?"

Ziggy laughed. Dr. Alessi laughed at this interchange.

Reid then completed his introductions, and he then began his work.

"Ziggy, do you still have a lock on Sam?" he asked.

"The signal is getting weaker and weaker by the hour," Ziggy replied. "If we do not act soon he will be lost forever."

"I want a hand-controller," said Reid. "And I want the imaging chamber prepared to receive me as soon as possible."

"That may take some time," said Ziggy.

"You have ten minutes," Reid replied. "I want to get to Sam as soon as possible."

A slight smile appeared on Thrawn's face as he was told they were now mere moments away from Project Quantum Leap. As soon as he heard this news he called back to his Jem'Hadar warriors. They soon began to prepare themselves for battle.

It wasn't long before they were flying over Stallion's Gate. Thrawn began to run a sensor check on the area. He picked up residual radiation still left over from the first-ever detonation of an atomic bomb nearly sixty years previously. Then, he found what he was looking for: life signs, located deep underneath a mountain.

Thrawn signaled to the pilot to head towards the mountain, and seconds later he began to arm the ship's weapons systems.
