Anyway, it is a Festivus tradition that one should air their grievances to their family and friends. If I were to do that it would probably take me an age, and if some of my family (and I use that word loosely) are reading this they are probably getting ready to leave a comment here. They can feel safe in the knowledge that this grievance is not aimed at them. It is aimed at a company, one of the many I’ve been employed by during my working life.
You see, if you’ve been reading this blog you’d know that about nine months ago I lost my job because of my ongoing health problems, mainly because I couldn’t provide a date for when I’d be able to return to work.
A few months after I first went down ill the branch had one of their regular reshuffles and moved various staff around. This meant that the woman who had overseen the department I worked for had been replaced and moved elsewhere in the store.
I have nothing against the person who was my boss when I was first ill. They showed me a great deal of support during those early months, often telephoning me to find out how I was, and often asking my brother how things were whenever he was in the store.
Then a few months later she was replaced by another woman, someone I had worked under briefly during my first stint in this store. This is where my grievance begins, because if I had been moved to a new department and there was someone I was in charge of who’d been off work sick for a while I would have taken a few minutes to telephone them to let them know of the change, as well as offering help a support during a difficult time.
This never happened with my new manager. Now here comes the second grievance. I had two more meetings scheduled with the People Manager (otherwise known as the HR Manager) to discuss my situation. My new manager was also scheduled to attend those meetings, but she never showed, even though she was on duty in the store on those days. I did not even hear from her when my contract was terminated.
This, to me, seemed very unprofessional and very disrespectful, especially as her predecessor still gives the odd hello to my brother whenever he is in the store, nine months after I left.
It is also one of the reasons I haven’t set foot in the store since. Although I was not there physically as a member of her team I was her responsibility, and if you haven’t got your staff’s best interests at heart, then what kind of manager are you?
