As part of their continuing series Kayfabe Commentaries have once again delved into the vast annals of wrestling history with their latest release Timeline: The History of WWE 1985, and this time the interview subject if former Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion Greg “The Hammer” Valentine.
With Sean Oliver as the resident question master the Hammer discusses many of that year’s notable events, such as the very first Wrestlemania, the celebrity connection, the debuts of Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart, Randy Savage, King Kong Bundy and Jimmy Hart amongst others, as well as Vince McMahon’s continued national expansion program.
As an interview subject Valentine makes for very interesting viewing. While he may look like a grumpy old man in desperate need of a haircut he is a great storyteller, especially when discussing his IC title feud with Tito Santana and the formation of the Dream Team with Brutus Beefcake.
Valentine is very forthcoming with his views on the way the business was changing back then, and also of the way various matches and angles were booked. He seemed genuinely disappointed that he didn’t face Santana at the Wrestlemania, having to put up with the blow-off match with the Junkyard Dog instead.
So how does this rate with other releases in this series? Although this isn’t my favourite part of this series it’s still pretty good, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about WWE’s expansion during that time.
So in all the latest Timeline release gets the thumbs up as a very well produced history lesson.
