The Best of Backyard Wrestling - DVD Review
So I’m walking past my local video shop a few weeks back. Normally the guy has a stand outside on the pavement with some cut-price videos. Always one for a bargain, I flicked through his latest offerings, and one particular DVD title piqued my interest - The Best of Backyard Wrestling, for the paltry sum of £4.99. Since it had been a while since I had touched on this topic, I thought that at that price, it would be worth a look-see.
101 Reasons Not To Be A Professional Wrestler - DVD Review
So you think you know everything there is to know about professional wrestling. You’ve spent years watching television, reader insider sheets and numerous websites. Well, you’re about to get a surprise.
AAA When Worlds Collide - Retro Review
For this week's retro review, we'll step back in time to November 1994. With the help of Eric Bischoff and World Championship Wrestling, Mexican promotions AAA and IWC presented When Worlds Collide from the Los Angeles Sports Arena, and live on pay-per-view throughout North America, thanks to WCW's connections. I've heard a great deal about this event over the past few years, and having recently come into possession of a copy, I looked forward to reviewing this show.
Bloodbath: Wrestling's Greatest Steel Cage Matches - DVD Review
Once again we dip into the video archives for this week's column, as we take a look at one of WWE's recent DVD releases, Bloodbath: Wrestling's Greatest Steel Cage Matches.
The Best of Hulkamania - Video Review
A lot of people (well, two) asked me some time ago "what was the first wrestling video you ever brought?" Well, considering that I've never really been a big fan of the guy, and from what I've written about him in the past, you may find it surprising that the first video I ever brought from anywhere was actually dedicated to Hulk Hogan, mainly because "The Best of Hulkamania" was the only wrestling video available in my local Woolworths in 1990. So now I'm going to take a step back in time to give a review of this tape.
1PW A Cruel Twist of Fate - DVD Review
Super shows seem to be the in-thing here in Britain at the moment. They began with The Wrestling Channel’s International Showdown, before moving on to Universal Uproar, both of which took place at the Coventry Skydome. But these Alex Shane-promoted shows were just the tip of the iceberg, as wrestling merchandise company 1 Up Games soon jumped on the bandwagon with their debut show. A Cruel Twist of Fate, held at the Doncaster Dome last October, and released on DVD shortly afterwards.
GAEA Girls - Film Review
When The Wrestling Channel began broadcasting last year, one of the promotions that initially caught my eye was GAEA Japan, with it's strong style of women's wrestling. So it was with a great deal of interest that I finally managed to get a hold of the GAEA Girls documentary, funded by the BBC and directed by Kim Longinotto & Jano Williams.
Extremely Crazy Wrestling Fans - DVD Review
The in-thing at the moment seems to be for independent production companies to produce documentaries focusing on certain aspects of the wrestling business. In the past few months we’ve had 101 Reasons Not To Be A Pro Wrestler and Catch: The Hold Not Taken, and now, a documentary entitled Extremely Crazy Wrestling Fans has just been released.
Catch: The Hold Not Taken - DVD Review
When you watch Raw & Smackdown every week, how many of you wonder just where it all began? I’m not talking about when Vince McMahon senior broke away from the NWA about forty years ago, I’m talking about going back further than that.
Beyond the Mat - Film Review
It’s been about six years since what is regarded as the best wrestling documentary was released. Director Barry Blaustein spent three years travelling up and down the highways of America in an attempt to find out what the wrestling business is really about. The end result was the compelling and controversial Beyond the Mat.
Classic Shoot Interview: Jake "The Snake" Roberts - DVD Review
He is regarded as the greatest psychologist in the history of professional wrestling, and he’s the subject of Red Church Production’s latest DVD release.
Pride Shockwave 2004 - TV Review
They’ve finally done it. Having provided us with extensive MMA coverage over the past few years, Eurosport’s Fight Club series finally brings us some action from the Pride Fighting Championship, beginning with the Shockwave 2004 show, which took place in December of that year.
K-1 Asian Grand Prix, Seoul, South Korea 2005 - TV Review
As part of their Fight Club series Eurosport continued their coverage of the Japanese mixed martial arts K-1 promotion with coverage of their Asian Grand Prix event in Seoul, South Korea this past March. The coverage centered on the Grand Prix tournament itself, and sadly the other matches were edited out of the show. However, this didn't spoil my enjoyment of this show.
Cage Warriors 3 on The Wrestling Channel - TV Review
This past Friday, The Wrestling Channel here in the UK gave their viewers something they’ve been asking for for a while, mixed martial arts action in the form of the UK-based Cage Warriors 3 show, which took place in Southampton in March 2003.
MPW March Madness - DVD Review
It’s always good to take a look at a promotion you haven’t seen before, which is why, having met some of their stars a few months ago, I was eager to get a look at the Midlands Pro Wrestling product, which I was able to do, courtesy of their first ever DVD release, March Madness.
FWA Vendetta 2005 Fan Slam - DVD Review
Last month, the Frontier Wrestling Alliance presented Vendetta 2005 at the Broxbourne Civic Hall, and just a few weeks after the event, Red Church Productions have released their DVD of the Vendetta Fan Slam, held before the show and featuring interviews with some of the company’s top stars.
FWA When Thunder Strikes - Video Review
It's video review time again, and this week we travel back in time to April 21st, 2001, and the Frontier Wrestling Alliance's "When Thunder Strikes" show from Bolton.
FWA MyTV Episodes 1 & 2
Episode 1
A few weeks ago I reviewed the first episode of the UWA's Wrestling Rampage show, which was broadcast on Live TV here in Britain in 1999. Two years later, the Frontier Wrestling Alliance made their debut on cable television, appearing on MyTV in Portsmouth. So, having reviewed the UWA's first effort to get British wrestling back on television, now it's time to look at the FWA's efforts.
MSG Oldies - Video Review
This edition of The Two Sheds Review is going old school, and when I say old school, I mean old school. Yours truly has managed to get his hands on some classic wrestling footage, a one hour video labelled “MSG Oldies”, a chance to look into the past and a chance to see how wrestling has changed over the years.
Lou Thesz: Strong & Beautiful - Video Review
Following on from my review of the MSG Oldies compilation tape, yours truly stays old school with another look into the past, this time a Japanese compilation looking at the legendary Lou Thesz, titled Lou Thesz: Strong & Beautiful.
Jonny Storm Rare & Unreleased - DVD Review
It seems quite apt that just a week after he won the new WAW British Lightweight title that I should take a look back at the career of “The Wonderkid” Jonny Storm in video form, with a look at Jonny Storm - Rare & Unreleased.
Behind Closed Doors with Jake Roberts - DVD Review
It’s no secret that I’ve been a fan of Jake “The Snake” Roberts in the past. He was one of the wrestlers that got me hooked on American wrestling back in 1989, and having worked with him during his stay here in Britain, I’ve been lucky, and unlucky enough to see many aspects of the man’s character.
The Chris Hamrick Shoot Interview - DVD Review
Red Church Productions recently released their first ever DVD, The Chris Hamrick Shoot Interview. Filmed in 2003 during the FWA’s British Breakout tour, the production crew filmed several segments backstage at the shows, as well as talking to Hamrick about his career in the wrestling business.
Hardcore Homecoming - DVD Review
As anticipation towards the re-launch of Extreme Championship Wrestling continues, what better time to take a look back almost a year to the other ECW reunion show of 2005, Shane Douglas’ Hardcore Homecoming.
The Best of Burchill - DVD Review
He’s been touted as a superstar of the future. British sensation Paul Burchill, having plied his trade on the British wrestling scene since his debut in 2002, relocated to America at the beginning of the year when he was taken on by World Wrestling Entertainment. But how did the FWA’s “Rookie Monster” fare outside of Britain’s most hyped wrestling promotion? You can find out how in Figure Four Film’s “Premier Promotions: The Best of Burchill”.
NWF Kids Pro Wrestling: The Untold Story - DVD Review
It was in 1984 when, after the introduction of public access television in America, Shawn Crossen of Anoka, Minnesota, launched his own wrestling promotion, and within three years his television shows were being seen all over the country, and he was drawing sell-out crowds at his regular live events.
Nora Greenwald: Shooting The Crap - DVD Review
Perhaps the best American female wrestler of her generation. Nora Greenwald, the woman behind the Molly Holly gimmick, shocked the wrestling world by leaving the WWE earlier this year. With tons of rumours flying around as to just why she left, Nora attempted to set the record straight with her Shooting’ The Crap shoot interview DVD.
The Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior - DVD Review
If you’ve been reading my columns for a while now, you’ll know that I am a huge mark for the Ultimate Warrior. He was one of the reasons I got back into wrestling in 1989, and I still consider his bout with Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania VI as one of the best ever.
NWO Back in Black - DVD Review
They are regarded by many as the greatest unit in the history of professional wrestling, but I couldn’t help but think that this thing came about a little too late.
NWF Superstars Spectacular '86 - DVD Review
A few weeks ago I reviewed the DVD release of NWF: Kids Pro Wrestling - The Untold Story, which told of how a fourteen year old promoted his own shows and gained national exposure on public access television. Now we’re going to take a look back at their first show at the Anoka Armoury in Anoka, Minnesota, Superstar Spectacular ‘86.
NWA Starrcade '89: Future Shock - Retro Review
This week's retro show review takes us back to December 1989, and the biggest show on the National Wrestling Alliance's calendar, Starrcade '89 - Future Shock. But this Starrcade was different, with two round robin tournaments to crown Iron Man and Iron Team champions, featuring the top stars of the NWA at the time. So here we go.
TBW Finally - DVD Review
It took them a while, but finally (pun intended), this past August, Jamie Worthing’s Total Brutality Wrestling presented their debut show, “Finally”, recently released on DVD, courtesy of WAR Productions.
FWA Revival - TV Review
This past Sunday I, along with millions of other wrestling fans in this country, saw something on television we had not seen since 1988, a British wrestling show on a British television channel.
The Ultimate Warrior - Video Review
With the WWE having done a great deal of Warrior bashing in the past few months, I thought it would be a good idea to go back a few years and look at a 1990 video release, entitled The Ultimate Warrior, a release which, to this day, is still the WWF/E’s biggest selling VHS release in Britain, proving that the Warrior had great drawing power in this country.
TNA Victory Road 2004 - Retro Review
Instead of stepping back in time a few years for my latest review, I'm going to step back in time a few months, to last November. Total Non-Stop Action took a massive gamble, and some would say a massive step forward, by ditching their weekly pay-per-views in favour of a monthly pay-per-view schedule, with their first three hour offering, Victory Road, taking place at the Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida last November, and after four months, I've finally gotten around to reviewing my copy of the show.
The Wrestling Channel International Showdown - DVD Review
This past March, The Wrestling Channel took a massive gamble by bringing over some of the world’s best wrestlers outside of WWE over to Britain. Stars from ROH, TNA and NOAH joined with those from the FWA for International Showdown, held in the Coventry Skydome before a crowd of over 3,000, and released as a two disc DVD set shortly afterwards.
