Future Tense - Chapter Three

After managing to calm Space Ghost again and appraising Pendragon of the situation Watt and Magus began to discuss the situation.
“If memory serves Simon is due to attend the Lord Mayor’s Banquet tomorrow night.” said Watt.
“Which is well known to everyone.” said Magus. “The assassination attempt would probably take place there.”
Then they noticed that the sky outside began to get very dark.
“Odd.” said Magus. “There shouldn’t be any storms today.”
There was then a bright flash as what looked like bolts of electricity flashed across the sky above the mansion. Magus and Watt went into the monitor room where they found Space Ghost.
“We have trouble.” he said. “I recognise those bolts. Something else is coming through time from the future.”
After sounding a red alert they raced outside and looked skyward to see a Terminator 1000 droid fall from the sky and land on the ground. Slowly the machine got up and stared at Space Ghost. Soon the other members of Anglo-Force joined them.
“I hope this doesn’t go like the last time.” said Watt.
It did. The Terminator had brought a laser blaster with him and he began to fire it. One blast hit Watt. Colossus One tried to attack but found himself thrown to one side. Red Sun fired a nova blast but the machine altered his cell structure and the blast passed right through him. Fire-Master tried to use his power to melt him but he got the same result. Reid then used his power to wrap his arms around the machine but the Terminator spun himself around at a high speed and sent Reid flying. Magus then tried to cast a spell against the Terminator but found himself felled by a blow to the head.
“This isn’t working!” Watt shouted. “We need a team effort. Kate, Ultare, Space Ghost, combine your blasts!”
Red Sun, Fire-Master and Space Ghost then stood side by side, and each of them fired their blasts at the Terminator at the same time. The machine couldn’t get out of the way, and the combined blast shattered him into a thousand pieces.
    “We did it!” cried Pendragon.
“Don’t count your chickens.” said Space Ghost. “Look!”
Space Ghost pointed to the ground where the various pieces of the Terminator lay. Slowly they began to move towards each other, and a few seconds later they reformed and the machine was whole again.
“Here we go again!” said Watt.
“Captain, I have a plan.” said Space Ghost. “Look at his arm. He’s wearing a strap like mine. If you rip the strap off his arm he’ll be pulled back to the future!”
“I know what you’re thinking.” said Watt. “Arthur, I’ll need you for this!”
The plan conceived they put it into action. White Knight ran up to the Terminator and hit it several times with Excalibur. As the machine was distracted Watt grabbed the Terminator’s arms while Space Ghost rushed forward and ripped the strap from it’s arm. Then a light began to form around it as it was ripped back to it’s own time. Afterwards Watt looked at Space Ghost.
    “Thanks for the plan.”
“Thank the assassin as well.” Space Ghost replied. “He played his part in it.”

In a secret location the architects of the assassination began to finalise their plans for the following evening. The assassin walked down a corridor until he came to a large chamber. In that chamber sat a man. He could not see his face because of the shadows.
“Speak Alasimorph. Are the plans complete?”
“They are Lord Gemini. Kennedy will die tomorrow evening.”
Suddenly a sword was thrown at Alasimorph’s feet.
“This is a replica of Excalibur. You will need it.”

The day of the Lord Mayor’s Banquet came, and that evening Magus, Red Sun, Fire-Master, McCloud and Colossus dressed up in their best clothes. Pendragon came in, still dressed in his normal clothes.
“What’s going on?” he asked. “Why wasn’t I told about this?”
Then Watt entered. He too was dressed in his normal clothes.
“Because you’re staying here with me.”
“Good.” said Space Ghost. “That way we’ll know that Kennedy won’t be killed.”
“And you are too.” said Watt. “All three of us are staying here.”
“But who’s going to take command in the field with both of us here?” asked Pendragon.
“I am.” said Red Sun. “You said a few weeks ago we needed a third in command, and I’m sure Magus will help me.”
“Come one.” said Magus. “We’d better get going.”
An Anglo-Force sky-jet was soon winging it’s way towards London. Watt watched for a few seconds and then turned to Pendragon and Space Ghost.
“Anyone for a game of Monopoly, or Cluedo?”
Instead of choosing Waddington’s poplar board games they decided on a game of poker. Pendragon and Space Ghost got annoyed when Watt, using he renowned poker face, won almost every time. Even so the tension between Pendragon and Space Ghost grew.
“I normally don’t play games with killers!” said Space Ghost.
Pendragon thumped the table, sending all the cards flying.
“How many bloody times do you have to be told? I’m not a bloody killer!”
“It’s well known in my time that you’re a killer!”
“Well maybe your time is now up!”
With that Pendragon pushed his chair back and lunged towards Space Ghost. Only Watt’s intervention stopped Pendragon from getting to him.
“Calm down both of you!” he shouted.
Both men back down. Pendragon kicked the chair out of the way.
    “I need a drink!”
Pendragon then walked towards the kitchen. Space Ghost sat down in his chair.
“Your friend is a bit reckless.” he said.
“The White Knight is one of the best around. If it wasn’t for him Anglo-Force would have probably gone under long ago.”
“It’s because of him that Anglo-Force will go under!”
Not a word was spoken for the next few minutes. The air in the room could be cut with a knife. Space Ghost was the first one to break the silence.
“Your friend has been gone a long time.” he said.
    “You’re right.”
Watt walked over to the computer panel.
“Computer, location of Arthur Pendragon please.”
“White Knight is in the hangar bay.”
“Looks like your pal is trying to make his escape!”
Watt and Space Ghost soon made their way to the hangar entrance. They saw Pendragon, now dressed in his White Knight costume, boarding a sky-jet.
    “Arthur!” Watt cried. “Wait!”
Watt and Space Ghost stepped forward, and suddenly there was a massive explosion which blew the two of them back. When the smoke cleared they saw the sky-jet taking off.
“One of the best around eh?” said Space Ghost. “And not reckless?”
“He’s heading towards London.” said Watt. “Grab my arm and hold on tight. We can get to the banquet quicker this way!”

The guests began to arrive at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet. The members of Anglo-Force, all smartly dressed, blended in well. Red Sun soon approached Magus.
    “Is everything alright?” she asked.
“Everything seems in order.” said Magus. “But I’m getting rather a strange feeling that someone here is not all he seems.”
Magus looked very uneasy. The strange feeling he got got stranger when a waiter walked past him. The waiter seemed to recognise Magus. Upon seeing the wizard he seemed to quicken his step. Then Red Sun’s communicator sounded. Reaching into her purse she took it out.
    “Go ahead.”
“James here. Arthur managed to get away from us. He’s on his way to the banquet now in a sky-jet.”
Red Sun looked out of the window to see the sky-jet landing in a nearby street.
    “He’s here now.”
“Try to stop him. Space Ghost and I will be there shortly.”
“I’ll deal with him.” said Magus. “If he won’t be spoken to I’ll persuade him in another way.”
Magus was soon outside. White Knight began to approach the building. Magus barred his way.
“I’m afraid I can’t let you go in there Arthur.”
“Out of my way Magus. I don’t want to have to hurt you.”
    Magus laughed.
“I hardly think you can hurt me!”
White Knight then pushed Magus to the ground and continued on his way.
