The Fabulous Foursome - Chapter Four

Somehow Oswald had made it back to his old house. The car crash had left him with a slightly sprained ankle and bruising to his left arm, Nevertheless he knew he had to work quickly, otherwise his prospective employers would not be pleased.
Going to his workshop he quickly got out the plans he had stolen from Reid. He scoured over them trying to find out where he had gone wrong. He looked at the plans over and over, but he could still not see what had gone wrong. The formula for the new power source seemed flawless. Perhaps the design fault was in the cannon’s mechanism itself.

He then took out his own drawings, the sketches he had made while he was constructing the cannon. He could see nothing wrong. He could not see why the cannon had exploded. Why had it happened? Perhaps the answer lie at Reid’s house, in his basement. Oswald then walked into his bedroom. After taking out a bandage and strapping his arm and ankle he went over to his wardrobe and opened the door. He smiled when he saw his white costume and his white helmet with the mesh face. Gunner was about to return.

It was a few hours later when Gunner, jet-pac strapped to his back, flew over the streets of Nottingham. It was pitch black, and he had to use his infra-red sensors in his helmet to help guide him. After hovering for a few minutes he soon got his bearings and flew off in the direction of Reid’s house.
Gunner landed on a roof overlooking Reid’s house. Then, using the scanner in his helmet and other devices he had on his body he began scanning the house. He began cursing when his sensors told him that there were four men in the house. They couldn’t, however, tell him who they were, but it was obvious one of them was Dr. Reid. He then took to the skies once again and headed towards the house, and while he flew he reached into his belt. He soon landed on the ground not far from the house. He then took the small device and switched it on. A thin laser beam began to emanate from it and it began to cut a hole in the ground.
In the basement Reid and Borne began to study more of Reid’s plans.
“How much range will this detector of yours have?” asked Borne.
“At the moment I have no idea. That is why I need to make these adjustments. Then we’ll be able to test it.”
Then Borne looked up at the ceiling.
“Can you hear that Doctor?” he asked.
    “Hear what?”
“It sounds like some sort of humming noise.”
Then dust began to fall from the ceiling and onto the table. A crack then appeared, and it gradually got longer and longer. Then a portion of the ceiling fell to the ground, and it was soon followed by a much larger piece. Then Gunner came falling through and landed on the table. On seeing this Borne raised his hands and was about to bring his bracelets together. Gunner took out his pistol and fired. The blast ripped through Borne’s shoulder, and a few seconds later another blast ripped into Reid. Both fell to the floor. It was then that Gunner began his search of Reid’s files.
At that moment Solo and Supercop were arriving back at the house. They had gone to get some new components. As soon as they arrived they could tell something was wrong. Solo walked to the basement door and put his ear to it. He could hear the noise of furniture being moved and overturned.
“We’d better get in there.” said Supercop.
“No.” said Solo. “A rush attack would be bad, especially if Charles and Dr. Reid are still in there.”
Solo placed his hand on the door handle and slowly turned it. The door creaked as it opened. Solo then looked through the gap in the door and saw Gunner ransacking the room. Solo began to move the door again, and again it creaked, but this time Gunner turned round as he heard the noise. Quickly he drew his pistol and fired a laser blast at Solo. Solo just had time to get out of the way. Then Supercop charged through the doorway and crashed into Gunner. A brawl ensued as Gunner and Supercop exchanged blow after blow. While all of this was going on Solo entered the basement and rushed over to where Reid and Borne were lying. He quickly revived Reid, and it was a good job he did because Gunner was gaining an upper hand in his fight with Supercop. Gunner had kicked Supercop where no man should be kicked. It was the only way he could gain any sort of edge. Gunner then reached into his belt and took out a small round object. He hurled it at Supercop, and there was a small explosion as it blew up in his face. The force of the explosion sent Supercop flying against a far wall. The force of the impact rendered him unconscious. Then Borne got to his feet and held his arms in the air. He then brought his bracelets together with a might clang, and Charles Borne had vanished. In his place stood Marvel Boy. Gunner soon saw the new arrival to the scene and once again took his laser pistol in his hand and aimed. Marvel Boy placed his hand on his temple, and a large table rose up into the air and smashed into Gunner’s back. He let out a huge cry of pain because of the force of the impact. He fell to his knees and held the base of his spine. He began to reach into his belt again, but a swift blow to his mid-section. Gunner was  now winded and in severe pain. Gunner knew he was being outmatched in this battle. So he reached round to his shoulder and activated his jet-pac. The noise of small jet engines filled the room, as did the smoke from the small engines. He began to rise into the air, towards the hole in the ceiling he had created earlier. As he began to rise higher and higher into the air he found himself being pulled down. He looked down at this feet and saw the arms of Dr. Reid holding him down. Reid was using his newfound power to stop Gunner from leaving. But Reid was in a weakened state. He did not know how much longer he could hold Gunner. He had been weakened by Gunner’s earlier attack. The strain began to show on his face. The seconds passed, and Reid began to feel the pain. Then he gradually lost his grip. Gunner began to rise into the air. A few seconds later and Reid lost his grip. He slumped to the ground as Gunner made his escape. All they could do was watch Gunner flying off into the night sky. He had failed on his mission, but he had been allowed to escape.
“There’s no point in going after him.” said Solo.
Just then Supercop began to come around.
    “Where’s Oswald?” he asked.
“Gone.” Solo replied. “And there’s no point in going after him. He failed. If he was working for the Mafia he’ll be punished.”
Solo was right. When Gunner returned to his dwelling he found the place in ruins. All of his equipment had been destroyed in a massive bomb blast. Under his breath Gunner cursed the Mafia, and then he cursed the foursome that had caused him to fail: Paul Solo, Dr. Daniel Reid, Marvel Boy and Supercop, a truly ‘fabulous’ foursome.
