Future Tense - Chapter Six

The atmosphere could be cut with a knight in the sky-jet as Watt, Magus, White Knight, Red Sun, McCloud, Colossus, Fire-Master, Reid and Moriarty contemplated what they were about to do. Watt’s thoughts were on the future of the team. They were, after all, about to attack a government plant. Then White Knight, in the pilot’s chair, turned round to the others.
“We’re coming up on the Cyberdine plant.”
The sky-jet swooped in low over the plant. Everything looked dead.
“I don’t like it.” said Moriarty. “It’s too quiet.”
“For once I agree with you.” said Watt. “Arthur, take us down.”
White Knight landed the jet in a nearby clearing, and they disembarked to find everything quiet.
“It’s still too quiet.” said Moriarty.
The quietness was soon broken by the sound of a hatchway in the ground opening. Suddenly ten Sentinel robots appeared out of nowhere.
“Heads up!” said Watt. “This is where the fun starts!”
And the ‘fun’ soon did as the battle began. Watt took to the air and connected with several blows to one of the robot’s jaws, blows that would have felled a giant oak, but to these machines they meant nothing. He then unleashed with several in quick succession, and these at least managed to dent the machine. He then realised that he wasn’t going to get anywhere by just punching the thing. So he managed to get a hold of something on the head, and with all his might he managed to wrench it’s head from it’s shoulders.
Red Sun stood on the ground as one of the giant robots approached her. As it lumbered towards her she extended her hands in front of her and fired a massive nova blast at it, separating it’s head from it’s torso. It then fell to the ground like a pile of scrap metal.
White Knight showed some agility that he very rarely displays. Running as fast as he could he then leapt up into the air, and with the aid of Excalibur sliced one of the Sentinel’s arms clean off. Sparks began to fly as the robot fell to it’s knees. Then McCloud came up and used a move he had used many times before by slicing the machine’s head off with his sword.
Moriarty meanwhile showed his tremendous fighting skills against several of the machines. He hurled his shield at one of them and knocked out it’s optical sensors, making it go blind. Then he took out a flash grenade and hurled it into the hold his shield had just made. This resulted in it’s head exploding.
Reid, realising his power would be no good against these huge machines, resorted to another approach. With laser blaster in hand he blasted his way through, as did Colossus.
Magus knew that this was the only tactic tat would work against these metal monsters. He fired several blasts of mystical energy, severely damaging some of them, and later he cast a spell which reduced some more into a slag heap.
But no matter how many of these machines they destroyed more and more kept coming from the Cyberdine plant. Eventually the members of Anglo-Force began to tire even though the battle was going their way. Then Watt realised they had to do something.
“We must find Kennedy!” he shouted to Magus.
    “Agreed!” Magus replied.
Then the wizard flew towards the building. As he did the ground began to shake. It felt as if an earthquake was hitting the place. Then the top of the building blew off and they saw it. It was huge, at least ten times the size of the other Sentinel robots.
“Oh boy!” said White Knight. “Now we are in big trouble!”
“Forget the other machines!” shouted Watt. “Concentrate your attack on big brother here!”
The others did as they were told, except Magus, who entered the building in search for Kennedy. Red Sun and Fire-Master fired a collected blast at the robot’s head but this had no effect. Moriarty hurled his shield, aiming for the optical sensors, but this also had no effect on the huge powerhouse. The swords of White Knight and McCloud were useless against this thing, as were Watt’s firsts.
Magus flew through the corridors of the underground caverns looking for any form of life. He soon found the huge main cavern, and Kennedy and Billiar, who were both bound up. Magus quickly untied them.
“I knew I’d find you in here Simon.” said Magus. “But I didn’t expect to find you here General.”
Magus helped Kennedy to his feet and helped him walk along the corridor as Billiar followed them.
“What went wrong here?” asked Magus. “We got a report of the robot rescuing you, and your patchy message.”
“It’s what I thought would happen. The bloody things have gone mad. They should never have been built in the first place!”
“They can still be used to protect the people.” said Billiar. “I believe we can…”
Magus turned around and pointed his finger at the General. He was annoyed to find that he could no longer speak.
“I’ve wanted to do that for ages.” said Kennedy.
Then as they moved down the corridor there was a loud rumbling noise, and suddenly the roof in front of them began to cave in. Magus only just managed to raise a force field in time.
    “What was that?” said Kennedy.
“A larger version of the Sentinels is attacking the others.” Magus replied. “It looks like things are not going well for them. We’ll have to find another way out of here, or make our own!”
Magus was right. The battle was not going to well for Anglo-Force. No matter what they did it had no effect on them. They knew this, Then Moriarty went up to Watt.
“I think I know a way we can destroy that thing.” he said. “What if one of us flew the sky-jet directly into it. The fuel would explode and take that thing with it.”
“And all of the underground caverns as well.” said Watt. “No. Not while Magus and Kennedy are still down there.”
    “But it’s the only way.”
“I said no. We’ll have to find another way.”
They then dived out of the way as a massive energy blast ripped into the ground near them. Then when Watt looked up he saw Moriarty racing towards the sky-jet. Before he could do anything he had taken off and was flying towards the huge robot. Watt then took to the sky and soon caught up with the aircraft. He then attacked himself to the roof as Moriarty flew it closer and closer towards the huge machine. Then, when they were just metres away, Watt phased his arm through the roof and managed to pull Moriarty through the roof and out of the way as the sky-jet plunged into the robot, causing a massive explosion. The light could be seen for miles around. Then at the instant the huge machine stopped working the other small Sentinels suddenly collapsed and they all ceased to function. At the same time however all of the underground tunnels and caverns also collapsed.
Watt and Moriarty landed on the ground near the others. Watt hastily looked around.
“Where are Magus and Kennedy?” he asked.
Suddenly a massive blast ripped through the ground and a rather dirty-looking Magus, Kennedy and Billiar emerged from below. Magus smiled.
“You could have waited!” he said. “You always were a bit impatient.”
“Blame the Professor here.” said Watt. “He’s the impatient one.”
As the clean-up operation at the plant began the others returned to the mansion. Kennedy sat talking to Magus.
“You realise there may be hell to pay.” said Kennedy. “Okay, you may have saved the country again but you destroyed the property of a wealthy overseas country. They may sure, and I might not be able to do anything to protect you.”
“Then I shall.” said Magus. “This team nearly broke up because of me before. It means a lot to me, and I’ll do anything to keep them together, even it if means us working independently. By the way, what about Moriarty?”
“He did help save me, and everyone else.” Kennedy replied. “It’s because of that I’m not going to press any charges against him. As for the other charges, well, Jim should be handling that now.”
In the main corridor Watt spoke to Moriarty.
“I never really got the chance to thank you.” said Watt. “You saved all of us back there. If it wasn’t for you this whole country would probably be overrun with these bloody machines.”
“You saved my life Captain. It was the least I could do.”
“You realise that if I wanted to I could hold you here. There are still several charges outstanding against you, including the time when you kidnapped me.”
    “Then why don’t you?”
“Because I’ve began to realise what you are really fighting for. If Space Ghost was right we’ll be needing someone like you in the future, someone who fights for what they believe in.”
Watt then opened the front door.
“Go.” he said. “I’ll tell the authorities you got away from us at the Cyberdine plant.”
Moriarty did not know what to do.
“Go, before I change my mind.” said Watt. “But remember this, if ever you need any help you know where to come.”
    “Likewise Captain Watt. Likewise.”
Moriarty then ran out of the mansion, and Watt closed the door behind him. He then wondered…could this be the beginning of a change in Cornelius Moriarty? Perhaps.
