Anglo-Force: Pendragon Chapter Fifteen: Clash of Eras (Climax)

A metallic tang, like old blood and ozone, coated Arthur’s tongue. He swallowed hard, the taste a stark reminder of the night’s grim purpose. The wind whipped at his white kevlar body armour, a cold caress against his face as he stood on the ancient battlements of the Tower of London. Below, the Thames flowed, a dark, indifferent ribbon under the sickly glow of the city’s emergency lights. Excalibur, a beacon of ancient power, hummed faintly in his grasp, its familiar weight a comfort against the encroaching dread.

From the inky expanse of the pre-dawn sky, they descended – a malevolent swarm of advanced Orsine drones, their forms sleek and predatory, like mechanical vultures circling their prey. Each drone pulsed with an internal, violet light, a silent herald of the technological augmented assault they were about to unleash. Arthur watched them, a grim resolve tightening his jaw. This was it. The clash of eras he had unknowingly prepared for his entire life.

Nearby, obscured by the Tower’s thick stone walls, Phineas Magus began his intricate weaving of protective spells. Arthur could feel the subtle shift in the air, a ripple of arcane energy emanating from the wizard’s position, like a net being cast over the venerable landmark. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ancient earth and something indefinable – magic itself, stirred into action.

Inspector Solo, a distant voice crackling in Arthur’s comms, relayed precise instructions to unseen police forces. 'Perimeter secure, Pendragon. Civilians evacuated. We’ve got your back on the ground.' Solo’s voice, usually so calm and measured, held a note of strained urgency, a testament to the unprecedented threat unfolding around them. The police sirens, now fading into the distance, were a mournful echo of the city’s fear.

Then, a distorted voice, amplified and warped, tore through the stillness of the early morning. It echoed from the largest drone, a monstrous contraption hovering above the swarm, its underbelly glowing with an ominous power. “Arthur. Do you see now? Do you see what they made me? What they took from me?” It was Peter Oswald, his voice laced with a bitterness that chilled Arthur to the bone. “You got your medals, your Crown Prosecutor’s office. I got this!” A cybernetically enhanced arm, glinting wickedly in the drone’s light, extended from Oswald’s perch atop the machine. “They left me for dead, Arthur. But Orsine… Orsine gave me a purpose. A way to make them all pay!”

The first sonic blasts erupted from the drones, tearing into the Tower’s ancient stone. Dust and debris exploded outwards as the concentrated waves of sound hammered against the battlements. Arthur, acting on instinct and Magus’s whispered guidance, raised Excalibur. A shimmering shield of golden energy flared around him, deflecting the invisible force. The ancient journal’s forgotten wards, now burning in his mind, were a silent chorus of resistance against the technologically augmented magic. He conjured magical barriers, the air around him shimmering with protective light, absorbing the shockwaves that threatened to pulverise the historic structure.

Suddenly, Arthur leapt. He moved with a speed and grace that belied his human form, a blur of white kevlar against the chaotic backdrop of the assault. He vaulted over the crumbling parapet, landing on the back of a larger drone, its metallic surface groaning under his weight. His target: Oswald, now a figure of stark, cybernetic menace, his eyes burning with a cold, unyielding fury. The battle erupted around them, a brutal clash of ancient magic versus futuristic technology, amplified by the personal stakes of their broken friendship.

Oswald, his cybernetic limbs moving with frightening speed and precision, launched a barrage of energy blasts from his enhanced hand. Arthur met each one with Excalibur, the sword a blur of silver light, deflecting and absorbing the attacks. “Peter, stop this!” Arthur’s voice was raw, desperate, cutting through the din of the battle. “This isn’t you! Remember the desert? Remember our oath?”

Oswald laughed, a harsh, grating sound that echoed with his profound bitterness. “The desert? You remember the desert, Arthur? I remember the pain! I remember the abandonment! You got to walk away, a hero. I got left behind, a broken man! Orsine… Orsine showed me the truth. The system failed us, Arthur. All of us!” His cybernetic arm transformed, a whirring of intricate gears and hydraulics, into a razor-sharp blade, arcing towards Arthur’s head.

Arthur parried with Excalibur, the clang of metal on ancient magic sending sparks flying into the night. He saw the flicker of something in Oswald’s eyes, a ghost of the friend he once knew, buried beneath layers of resentment and Orsine’s influence. He lunged forward, not to strike, but to grapple, to force a connection. “Peter, please! There’s still a way back! Orsine is using you!”

The cybernetic conditioning, however, proved too strong. Oswald’s face, contorted with rage, hardened further. “Too late, Arthur! Far too late for redemption!” He twisted, his enhanced strength throwing Arthur off balance. The desperate struggle continued, a dance of destruction and despair atop the precarious platform of the drone. Arthur found himself caught in an impossible choice: defeat Oswald, or try to save him, knowing that the fate of London hung in the balance.

He saw the truth in Oswald’s eyes then – a deep-seated hatred, a desire for vengeance that transcended logic. Orsine’s influence was a suffocating shroud, extinguishing any spark of their past friendship. Arthur parried another devastating blow, the force of it rattling his bones. This was no longer Peter, his old friend, but a weapon, honed and directed by the shadowy Orsine Foundation. He had to focus, to protect London, even if it meant fighting a ghost.

With a guttural roar, Oswald unleashed a devastating final attack, a concentrated sonic blast that threatened to rip the drone apart. Arthur, forced to abandon any hope of reaching his friend, focused solely on defence. He brought Excalibur up, pouring all of his honed magical energy into a wide, shimmering barrier, deflecting the blast upwards into the night sky, where it dissipated harmlessly.

Amidst the chaos, as Magus’s protective spells pulsed and Solo’s police forces continued their strategic response, Oswald’s primary drone, damaged but still functional, began to ascend. It vanished into the pre-dawn gloom, a dark silhouette against the first hint of orange on the horizon. Oswald was gone, leaving behind a trail of technological destruction, the bitter taste of his vengeance still lingering in the air.

As dawn approached, painting the battered Tower of London in hues of bruised purple and pale gold, the immediate threat was neutralised. The remaining drones, their power sources depleted or their systems overloaded by Arthur’s magic, fell silently to the earth, inert husks of Orsine’s ambition. Arthur stood amidst the wreckage, Excalibur still humming in his hand, his chest heaving. The true scope of Orsine’s manipulative power and the unseen magical adversary he feared became chillingly clear to Arthur. It wasn’t just about technology; it was about control, about weaponising resentment against a world it sought to dominate.

He knew then, with a bone-deep certainty, that this was only the beginning. He had accepted his birthright, embraced the power of Excalibur, and faced his past. But the future, shrouded in the shadows of Orsine’s machinations and an unseen, magic-opposing force, still lay ahead. He had to prepare. He would continue his work as a Crown Prosecutor, but with a new understanding of the shadows that lurked beneath the modern world, for he knew that the next confrontation was inevitable, and he would be ready for it.
