Inspector Paul Solo led the way, his face a mask of weary resolve. Beside him, Doctor Phineas Magus strode with an uncharacteristic urgency, his cavourite-topped cane tapping a brisk rhythm on the polished linoleum. Behind them, Celsius shuffled, magically restrained by glowing ethereal cuffs that pulsed with a faint violet light, his yellow eyes darting nervously around the unfamiliar surroundings. His unnatural yellow skin seemed even more pronounced under the harsh office lights.
“Right, Jeavons,” Solo began, pushing open the door to the Chief Inspector's office, “we've got a lot to unpack, and not much time.” Jeavons, perched on the edge of his desk, looked up, his thin-rimmed spectacles glinting. He still wore the rumpled suit from the previous day, a testament to the sleepless night he'd undoubtedly endured.
“Solo, Magus,” Jeavons acknowledged, his gaze flicking to Celsius, a flicker of disbelief in his eyes. “Is that… is that him?”
Magus nodded gravely. “Indeed, Chief Inspector. This is Celsius, the individual responsible for the recent… thermal anomalies.” He gestured towards the magically bound criminal. “However, his role is far more complicated than we initially believed.”
Solo stepped forward, placing a series of high-resolution photographs onto Jeavons's desk. They depicted the chilling message etched in ice on the vault wall: a stark, defiant declaration of war from Mother Nature. Jeavons picked one up, his brow furrowing as he traced the intricate, frozen script with a hesitant finger.
“Mother Nature,” he murmured, the name sounding foreign and absurd in the mundane confines of his office. “You're telling me this… criminal syndicate… is behind all of this? And this man is being… coerced?”
“Precisely,” Magus confirmed, his Scottish accent a low, serious rumble. “Erica Carnea, known as Mother Nature, is the ruthless leader of The Black Squadron. She is an exploiter of magical resources and individuals, and she has kidnapped Celsius's sister, forcing him to drain magical energy from specific, magically significant locations disguised as financial institutions. These heists are not for mere financial gain, Chief Inspector. They are part of a dark ritual, designed to grant her ultimate power.”
Jeavons slowly lowered the photograph, his face pale. “A ritual? Magical energy? Doctor Magus, with all due respect, this sounds like something out of a penny dreadful.” He ran a hand through his thinning grey hair, a visible struggle playing out across his features. His traditional investigative approach, honed over decades of dealing with tangible criminals and concrete evidence, was being stretched to breaking point. The theme of 'Good versus Evil, Right versus Wrong' was blurring into an incomprehensible grey.
At that precise moment, the lights in the office flickered violently, then died, plunging them into a sudden, disorienting gloom. Emergency lights immediately clicked on, casting long, eerie shadows. A low, guttural rumble vibrated through the floor, followed by a cacophony of distant shouts and the blare of car alarms.
“What in blazes was that?” Jeavons exclaimed, pushing himself off the desk. He rushed to the window, peering out at the familiar London skyline, now bathed in an unnerving twilight despite the early hour.
On the television screen mounted in the corner of the office, which had been showing a rolling news channel, the picture flickered back to life, displaying a chaotic scene. A breathless reporter stood before a backdrop of the City of London, her breath misting in the air, even though it was only early morning in May. Behind her, the towering glass and steel structures of the financial district were rapidly encasing themselves in thick, glittering ice. Cars on the streets below were frozen solid, their occupants scrambling out in a desperate panic, their faces etched with fear. A sudden, inexplicable temperature drop had gripped the capital.
“This is an unprecedented event, live from the heart of London's financial district,” the reporter stammered, her voice trembling. “Temperatures have plummeted to Arctic levels in a matter of minutes. Buildings are freezing from the outside in, and emergency services are struggling to cope with the widespread chaos. We're getting reports of power surges and complete gridlock across the Square Mile…”
Magus’s face was grim, his eyes fixed on the screen. “Mother Nature,” he stated, his voice devoid of emotion, “has made her move. This is her direct response to our intervention. A demonstration of power, Chief Inspector. Designed to isolate and demoralise us, and to expose London's vulnerability to supernatural forces.”
Solo felt a crushing weight descend upon him, a profound sense of personal failure. The widespread destruction, the public's palpable fear – it was all too real. His earlier empathy for Celsius, the reluctant anti-hero, was now complicated by the sheer scale of the threat. The 'Good versus Evil, Right versus Wrong' narrative, once so clear, had splintered into a thousand jagged pieces. He had suspected Celsius was a pawn, but had he underestimated Mother Nature's ruthlessness? Had he allowed her to gain the upper hand?
Jeavons, watching the unfolding disaster, finally sagged against the window frame, his rigid sense of right and wrong shattered. “My God,” he whispered, the words barely audible. “We're completely out of our depth. The Met… the whole city… we can't fight this with truncheons and handcuffs.”
The magical world's hidden rules and dangers, once a theory, were now terrifyingly clear. The cost of magic, unleashed with such devastating intent, was being paid in frozen buildings and widespread panic. This was The Black Squadron's shadow, stretching across London, palpable and unstoppable.
“Indeed, Chief Inspector,” Magus said, his voice regaining some of its usual calm, even amidst the chaos. “Conventional law enforcement is utterly overwhelmed. We are dealing with forces beyond mortal comprehension. But we are not entirely without recourse.” He turned from the window, his gaze sweeping over Solo and then settling on the terrified Celsius.
Magus’s eyes then narrowed with a renewed determination. “We must now actively seek out Mother Nature's base of operations. This attack is merely a prelude. She is accelerating her nefarious plan. I believe her next target, a location of immense ancient magical significance, will be the Tower of London.”
Jeavons stared at him, his face a mixture of despair and dawning comprehension. “The Tower of London? But… why there?”
“Because, Chief Inspector,” Magus replied, his voice firm, “she'll need all the resources she can muster to complete her ritual. And we, in turn, will need every resource at our disposal to stop her. Do you understand what I'm telling you?”
