Magus, observing Solo’s troubled expression from behind his spectacles, cleared his throat. “A wee bit more than a simple robbery, wouldn’t you say, Inspector?” His Scottish accent was soft, but the words carried weight. “That mark on the locket, the one you sensed, it’s a signature, a brand. From The Black Squadron.”
Solo tore his gaze from the locket. “The Black Squadron? You mentioned them before. What exactly are they?”
“An ancient syndicate, Inspector, older than many of the institutions they now mimic,” Magus explained, his gaze distant as if seeing through time. “They’re exploiters of magical resources, and, unfortunately, magical individuals. They operate in the shadows, pulling strings, orchestrating events for their own gain. And their leader, a woman known as Mother Nature, is particularly ruthless.”
He paused, stroking his white beard. “Mother Nature, or Erica Carnea as she was once known, has a reputation for her… coercive tactics. She delights in testing new recruits, pushing them to their limits, seeing what they’re truly capable of. This, I believe, is what we’re seeing with Celsius.”
Solo frowned, the pieces slowly clicking into place. “So, you’re saying Celsius isn’t acting alone? He’s being blackmailed? Forced into this?” The idea turned his ingrained sense of ‘good versus evil’ on its head. He’d seen Celsius as a clear-cut villain, a threat to public safety. Now, the possibility of him being a pawn, a victim even, shifted everything.
“Precisely,” Magus confirmed, nodding slowly. “The heists, the escalating destructive power… it’s a test. A demonstration of loyalty and ability, perhaps. Or, more likely, a desperate act to prevent a greater catastrophe, something Mother Nature is holding over his head. She’s not above threatening loved ones to ensure compliance.”
A wave of unease washed over Solo. The thought of such powerful magical manipulation going unchecked, controlling individuals and causing widespread chaos, was deeply troubling. “But what’s the end goal, Doctor? Beyond just testing him? What’s Mother Nature’s ultimate agenda?”
“Power, Inspector, always power,” Magus replied, a grim line forming on his lips. “These aren’t just random banks. As I explained, they’re strategically chosen locations, often disguised financial institutions built upon ancient ley lines or nodes of concentrated power. Celsius isn’t just robbing them of money; he’s draining their inherent magical energy. Mother Nature likely intends to use this accumulated energy for a darker ritual, something that will further her own nefarious schemes.”
Solo paced the worn rug of the study, the implications settling heavily upon him. “The collateral damage… the widespread fear. It’s all a consequence of this, isn’t it? The draining of these nodes, the uncontrolled release of magical energy. It’s not just about money; it’s about destabilising London, sowing panic.” The cost of magic, when wielded by such ruthless hands, was becoming terrifyingly apparent.
“Indeed,” Magus agreed. “The subtle signs you dismissed before – the unseasonal hailstorms, the power surges – these are merely symptoms of a much deeper malady, a magical imbalance caused by Celsius’s forced actions. Mother Nature cares little for the well-being of the city, only for the accumulation of power.”
A new resolve hardened Solo’s jaw. “So, our focus shifts. It’s not just about apprehending Celsius anymore. It’s about uncovering Mother Nature’s broader agenda, understanding what she’s planning, and stopping her. We need to find out who or what she’s holding over Celsius, if that’s truly the case.”
“A wise deduction, Inspector,” Magus said, a faint glimmer of approval in his eyes. “But be warned. The Black Squadron operates with extreme prejudice. Mother Nature is not one to be trifled with. Confronting them will be far more dangerous than anything you’ve faced before, even with my guidance.”
Solo met Magus’s gaze, the weight of the supernatural world pressing down on him, on London. His duty as a police officer, once so clear-cut, was now entangled with a complex moral dilemma. Celsius, the villain, might be a victim. Mother Nature, the unseen puppet master, was the true threat. The traditional investigative approach, Jeavons’s approach, wouldn't suffice here.
He nodded, a sense of grim determination settling within him. He would have to tread carefully, navigate this hidden world with newfound caution. The truth behind Celsius’s coercion, and Mother Nature’s ultimate plan, had to be uncovered. But how would he even begin to untangle such a web of magical deceit and human desperation?
