Back in Time: Civil War II Chapter Twenty-Seven

Project Quantum Leap, Stallion's Gate, New Mexico, 2000

With the defense shield having been taken out with one shot, Watt knew he had to do something to help. After all, he was one of the most powerful people on the planet. He could inflict some damage on the Imperial ships. After Ziggy let him out of the complex, he began to fly to the surface.

The first thing he saw surprised him. He soon saw Magus standing atop the mountain, using his vast power to battle the two Imperial ships. Watt watched as Magus seemed to be getting the upper hand in this battle. While watching this battle he failed to notice several Jem'Hadar warriors beam down behind him. He soon discovered they were there when a phaser blast hit him in the back, sending him falling face-first to the ground.

If such a thing were possible, Magus was having the time of his life. He hadn't engaged in a battle like this for years. He began to wonder why the Imperials had tried to attack him in this way in the first place. Soon, the battle began to bore Magus. Raising his hands, he aimed them at the ship's engines. With a delicately placed blast he disabled the engines of both ships, and watched as both of them crash-landed near the mountain.

For once, Reid did not know what to do. He watched his controller as the energy readings got higher and higher. Alessi had told him that the readings got like this just before Beckett leaped to his next 'assignment'.

"We've got to do something now," said Reid. "If you leap again we may lose you forever. We can't afford to do that."

"If you stay in the imaging chamber while that attack goes on you could be stuck in there for over a century!" said Beckett.

"A time lot shorter than that if you die of starvation first!" Then Reid's image began to shimmer again.

Ziggy then called him.

"Dr. Reid, the project has been invaded by the attacking force. You must leave the imaging chamber."

"I thought that Watt guy was meant to be a great fighter," said Al, hands in the air, a Jem'Hadar blaster pointed at his chest. "If he was, how come these lizards got past him?"

"Probably using the element of surprise," said Gushie. "A good tactic to use."

They were then surprised to see a blue-skinned man enter the control room, and were even more surprised to see a pristine white uniform on him. Thrawn stepped forward, and looked at those the Jem'Hadar warriors had captured. He soon fixed his gaze on Al. Stepping forward, the Socration was now eye-to-eye with him.

"Where is Reid?" he asked in a cold, emotionless voice.

"Reid who?" Al asked.

Thrawn raised his hand, and struck him across the face, bloodying his lip. Al stared at Thrawn with a look of utter contempt.

"I will ask you just one more time," Thrawn said. "Where is Daniel Reid?"

Thrawn then watched as one of the Jem'Hadar moved his tricorder around an apparently sealed door.

"What is it?" Thrawn asked.

"A holographic imaging system is behind this door," he reported. "And I'm also picking up one life-form, possibly that of Reid."

Thrawn walked over to the door to examine it for himself. However, he could find no way in.

"Blast it open," he ordered. "If Reid's inside, I want him alive!"

"No!" said Alessi. "You could kill him!"

"Then he is inside!" Thrawn said. "It was foolish of you to keep him from me. You will pay for that later."

Two phaser blasts later, and the door was open, hanging on whatever hinges it had left. Moments later, Thrawn entered.

Beckett watched as something appeared to enter the imaging chamber with Reid. Reid had told Beckett of his newfound stretching power, but could not believe his eyes when he saw Reid use it, against an opponent invisible to him.

"Who are you?" Reid asked. "What are you doing here?"

Beckett watched as Reid started a conversation with the invisible man.

"You want me? Why?"

Beckett had a rough idea what was going on. Whoever had invaded the project was now in the imaging chamber with Reid.

"You're crazy!" said Reid. "I won't go with you!"

Beckett then watched as the struggle began. Whoever it was who wanted Reid was putting up a good fight. Beckett knew he was helpless, that he could do nothing to help his old friend. The struggle was soon over. Reid had won.

"What's going on?" Beckett asked.

"When we get you out of here I'll explain."

Thrawn stumbled back into the control room, having vastly underestimated Reid's fighting ability.

"Hah!" said Al. "I see the boy kicked your ass!"

"Silence!" Thrawn boomed.

Thrawn watched as the door to the imaging chamber closed itself again, sealing Reid inside.

"You!" said Thrawn, pointing to Gushie. "I want control of this computer now!"

"I can't do that!" said Gushie. "Ziggy runs on an independent program system. The only one who has the code to hand control of her over is Dr. Beckett."

"And where is he?"

"New York City, 1967."

Then, the door swung open, and a slightly dazed Watt entered the control room.

"Looks like I was wrong about the kid," said Al.

"Aim your weapons at him!" Thrawn ordered. "Fire at will!"

The Jem'Hadar warriors did as they were told, and a tide of phaser blasts soon rained down on Watt. This time he was prepared for them, and he altered his density so they bounced off him, causing him virtually no harm at all. But the phaser blasts were causing harm to the control room. As they bounced off Watt they hit several of Ziggy's data banks, causing them great damage.

Now free from the Jem'Hadar, Gushie, Al, and Alessi scurried over to the main control panel. Gushie began to look worried.

"This is not good," he said. "Those energy blasts are sending the accelerator into overload. Dr. Beckett could leap at any minute!"

As Magus stood, surveying the fallen Jem'Hadar that lay on the ground all around him, he heard a noise from inside, the noise of several phaser blasts. He knew he had to get inside, and quick. When he entered he saw Watt engaged in a fist fight with several of the Jem'Hadar, with many of the computer systems lying in tatters around him. He was so interested in this scene he failed to notice Thrawn running towards him. With one heavy charge he knocked the wizard off his feet, and both of them flew across the room and came crashing down to the ground. Magus was more fascinated than surprised by this attack. He began to think that Thrawn had never heard of Magus' power, for the wizard used it to send the Grand Admiral flying off him, and back to a nearby wall. However, Thrawn soon got to his feet, and tried to attack Magus again. Once more, he was no match for him.
