Our review of old WAW shows, thanks to the videos supplied by Carl Smith, owner of www.wrestlinginbritain.co.uk continues. After the 19th August, 2000 show at the Norwich Corn Exchange, we moved to the east coast, and the 26th August show at the Marina Centre in Great Yarmouth. Firstly, we have to put up with an appalling camera angle, as our view is from the corner of the ring, with the camera placed on the Marina Centre's stage. It makes it very difficult to see the action at times.
We are also told of a single elimination tournament, which only has three men in it. It makes me wonder if one of the wrestlers due to appear that night no-showed. Perhaps someone will tell me later. Anyway, on with the action.
LEE MAXX V HOT STUFF
A rather unusual occurrence for WAW here, with two popular faces squaring off against each other in the first round of the tournament. The small crowd seemed split on who to cheer for.
This was a very good, and very clean match. There was hardly an illegal move in the entire contest. Move countered move, and so forth. In fact, this was probably the best match of the entire card.
Hot Stuff won after a sunset flip to progress into the final against Bash. A very good contest. 8/10.
SHEENA SUMMERS V SWEET SARAYA
There was the usual mic work before the match. Saraya showed that she is perhaps better playing a heel than a face. She plays the role of a complete bitch extremely well.
I got the feeling watching this bout that this was perhaps one of Sheena's early matches. Saraya dominted throughout. Sheena very rarely mounted any sort of offence, and showed a distinct lack of ability in the rnatch. She showed a lot of effort and heart, but it didn't really amount to much.
Saraya won after countering a sunset flip with her feet on the ropes. Not the best match I've seen these two on. 5/10.
HOT STUFF V BASH
The tournament final which made me wonder if someone no-showed. We also had a much better camera angle as the cam-corder was moved from our corner view to a side view of the ring.
There were some impressive moves from both men, showing that they had a style which complimented each other very well. When I first saw Bash last year I wasn't that impressed. Now, I'm starting to become a fan.
Despite having already wrestled a match, Hot Stuff wasn't easy pickings. Bash threw his entire arsenal at Hot Stuff, but still couldn't get the win.
Hot Stuff won the match, and the tournament, after levelling Bash with a superkick. A very enjoyable match, but you had to wonder, what the tournament prize actually was. 8/10.
RICKY KNIGHT w/Saraya V ZEBRA KID
Although these two have recently won rave reviews for their encounters at various shows recently, this match was probably not one of their best encounters. In fact, it was very disappointing.
The really confusing part of this match was Ricky's heel turn. A week earlier, at the Corn Exchange show, Ricky was a face, teaming with Tommy Lee against Bash and Tony Barron. The crowd in Norwich loved him, and almost cheered the building down.
However, when Ricky came out in Yarmouth, he grabbed the microphone and launched into his heel cockney tirade against the Yarmouth fans, threatening to get out of the ring and slap every fan in attendance. Hearing this it was obvious that the fans would cheer loudly for Zebra Kid.
The match was dominated by Ricky, using an array of power moves on his younger and smaller opponent. We had the usual interference from Saraya, some of which did not go well for him.
What was disappointing for me about this match was that the match went on for over ten minutes, and Ricky dominated the majority of it. He threw everything but the kitchen sink at Zebra Kid, but couldn't get the wind. Then, Zebra Kid pulled one out of the bag, beating Ricky with.....a hip toss. Yep. Ricky threw everything at Zebra, and was beaten by one of the most basic wrestling moves you see.
A very poor match, with some missed spots and a very poor ending. 5/10.
Two good matches and two poor matches leaves me wondering, was the glass half full or half empty.
More show reviews whenever I get round to watching the videos!
