RE-POST: WAW, Clacton, November 2002 - Live Show Review

A small but very vocal crowd, as seems to be the custom for this part of the world, ventured to the Princes Theatre in Clacton for WAW's November Explosion show for two title matches and a strong under card.

PHIL POWERS v PAUL TYRELL
The match pitting the former tag-team partners against each other was a good way of opening the show, and set the stall out for the rest of the evening.

Before the match began, Powers was annoyed at the negative response he was getting from the crowd. He would soon turn his attention to his opponent as the contest began.

In the previous contests I have seen between the two, the action has been fast paced, but this match was different, as Powers and Tyrell put on a wrestling exhibition, which the crowd seemed to enjoy.

Powers's apparent fascination with the response he was getting from the crowd proved to be his downfall. As he remonstrated with the ringside contingent, Tyrell got the roll-up to secure the pin.

In a show of sportsmanship after the bell, Tyrell congratulated Powers on his performance, because of the leg injury Powers had been suffering from. Tyrell offered the hand of friendship, stating that he would like to see the Essex Boys together again one day. Powers shook his hand, and the two left the
arena together.

SWEET SARAYA v ZODIAC
Saraya was not a happy woman. Having seen off the challenge of all of her opponents in the past few months, she complained about having to compete against Zodiac, the new rookie sensation, in this inter-gender match.

The youngster attacked before the bell, but Saraya soon fought back, dominating the rookie for the larger part of this contest. The masked man fought back well on a few occasions, but Saraya's experience was always too much for him to handle.

Zodiac showed guts, though. Saraya threw everything she could at him, but no matter how many times she tried, Saraya couldn't pin his shoulders to the mat, even kicking out of a tombstone pile driver, normally enough to put any opponent away.

Saraya's attack eventually proved too much for Zodiac though, as she planted him in the middle of the ring with her trademark power bomb. As the youngster limped away from the ring, Saraya praised his performance, saying that in a few years, Zodiac would be one to watch.

MTX v JIMMY OCEAN v ROBIN KNIGHTWING
A triple threat contest fought under elimination rules here, and surprisingly, Jimmy Ocean was the crowd's favourite.

Early on MTX and Knightwing, who was very vocal throughout the contest, formed alliance to take out Ocean. However, despite the match being fought under elimination rules, whenever one of the heels had Ocean down for the count, the other heel would break-up the pin. The glory hound in each of them
was apparent for all to see.

The alliance between Knightwing and MTX didn't last long though. Knightwing attacked MTX, and it wasn't long before the Canadian pinned him following a Samoan drop, leaving the Sexy Monkey in the ring with the craft veteran.

Knightwing dominated Ocean, slamming him on the hard floor before choking him with the aid of a punter's coat. In the ring, with Ocean lying prone on the mat, Knightwing climbed to the top rope. But Ocean was playing him for a fool, rolling out of the way as Knightwing came crashing down to the mat,
landing hard on his knee.

Now injured, Knightwing pleaded with Ocean, offering his hand. As Ocean sought the approval of the crowd, Knightwing attacked from behind. The attack didn't last long as Ocean fought back, centring his attack on Knightwing's injured leg. Moments later Knightwing was tapping as Ocean synched in a
half-crab.

Knightwing was obviously very upset after the match. Sore from his injury, he asked the referee for a hug. Thankfully, none was forthcoming!

WAW British Championship
BASH (c) v THE KRAFT (with Kharisma)
Following their altercation at October Outrage IV, Bash put his newly won title on the line against the promising rookie, slagging off Kraft before the contest began, calling him a "Jericho wannabe". Looks like he's been reading the Pro Wrestling Press!

Bash attacked before the bell, and dominated the larger man with a variety of moves. The action spilled to the outside, and Bash slammed Kraft onto the floor. Bash climbed back into the ring as Kharisma consoled the Kraft. Showing no regard for the woman, Bash came off the ropes and caught both  Kraft and Kharisma with a sliding drop-kick under the bottom rope.

Kraft fought back with some powerful clothesline, and used some good submission moves against the champion, something he seems to have introduced into his game plan recently. A welcome addition in my opinion.

The bout, and the championship, belonged to Bash though. Fighting back, Bash caught Kraft with a big boot coming off the ropes. He then followed this up with a DDT and a big splash off the top rope. A three count later, and he had the win.

WAW Tag-Team Championship
THE U.K. PITBULLS v "ROWDY" RICKY KNIGHT AND THE ZEBRA KID
With former British champion Hot Stuff still plagued by health problems, he had given permission to Hardcore champion Ricky Knight to defend the tag-team titles on his behalf. Going into the contest with the Zebra Kid as his partner, they would have their work cut out for them against the behemoths from the Norfolk coast in this best of three falls encounter.

At the beginning of the contest Knight tried to overpower the massive Bulk - big mistake! He tried this several times, but this tactic just didn't work. Calling Zebra into the ring, they finally got the big man off his feet with a double drop-kick.

Big Dave soon came into the action and levelled his opponents with a double clothesline. It wasn't long before the two big men were overpowering their much smaller opponent. Zebra's hardcore tactics worked for a few moments, but the Pitbulls soon fought back. A double chokeslam was followed by their big splash/legdrop combo. With the bout only seven and a half minutes old, the Pitbulls had the first pin.

The power attack continued against Zebra until he was able to tag in Knight. Finally, Knight's power attack worked as he showed tremendous strength in body-slamming the 35 stone Bulk.

Thing got a little out of hand shortly after as the action spilled to the outside of the ring. The referee lost control as the rules were seemingly thrown out of the window by all participants as the toys were introduced into the equation. Bulk was rammed into the arena wall by Knight. Big Dave slammed Zebra's head into the ringside table, before Knight clobbered him with one of the title belts - and then a chair. Knight seemed to relish this dose of hardcore action.

Back into the ring, Knight whipped Big D into the ropes. Making a quick tag to the Zebra Kid, he then catapulted his opponent into the rushing strongman. Three seconds later and the champions had the equalising fall.

With the bout eleven minutes old, Dave and Zebra continued the battle, with Dave getting Zebra into his powerful bearhug. It looked like Zebra would submit to the hold, but the hold was soon broken.

A short time later, the action spilled outside again, and we then had to fights to observe - Knight and Bulk outside, and Zebra and Dave in the ring. Chairs began to fly everywhere, and the champions were getting the worse of it.

As the bout approached the fifteen minute mark, the Pitbulls cornered their prey, and unleashed their trademark Pitbull Powerbomb on the Zebra Kid. New champions were crowned as the ref made the three count.

As the big men celebrated their latest title victory, Knight grabbed the microphone and congratulated them on their win. He then made a challenge for the next Clacton show - a hardcore encounter, in the confines of a steel cage. Never ones to back down from a challenge, the new champions accepted.

In conclusion - a good card, in no way spoiled by the low turnout. Clacton fans are always very vocal, which always makes for an enjoyable event.

Match of the night was the triple threat encounter involving MTX, Jimmy Ocean and Robin Knightwing. With each and every performance, Knightwing impresses me. He is very adept at working the crowd, and although this sort of thing may not be to everyone's taste, it is to mine.
