RE-POST: WAW, Hingham, April 2002 - Live Show Review

While the previous evening's show at The Talk got everyone talking, the next night's show in Hingham offered something different, a chance for recent graduates of the WAW training school to show their stuff.

BASH v "THE GUV'NOR" MATT JONES & DAN "THE MAN" QUINTAIN
WAW's newest tag-team got the opportunity to make their full debut in this handicap match against the baseball bat wielding maniac, and the two youngsters did not disappoint.

Matt Jones was the first one to step into the ring with Bash. Even though his inexperience showed early on, Matt put up a good fight back against Bash, before tagging Dan The Man.

Bash dominated Quintain for a long time, and seemed to take great delight in dishing out the punishment to the youngster. Quintain put in another comeback for his team, with The Guv, showed some good double team moves, including a clothesline over the top rope, and a really good looking double drop-kick.

But Bash's experience shone through. One mistake from Matt was enough, and Bash capitalised on it, hitting the home run to gain the victory.

EL SKELETOR v DETROIT
The winner of The Talk battle royal had his worked cut out for him against the masked man, who was making his WAW debut.

Detroit let his guard slip early on as the Mexican attacked early on, but showed that despite his lack of ring time, he seemed evenly matched against what appeared to be a very experienced opponent. Two moves that really impressed me was Detroit's version of The Rock Bottom, and a tremendous looking spinning leg drop.

Throughout the match, El Skeletor used many heel tactics, including several blows to Detroit's family jewels. But this wasn't enough to stop the American rookie, who fought back with a well executed Stunner, and a marvellous jumping DDT to gain the victory over the masked man.

I really can't speak too highly of Detroit's performance here. With just a few battle royals under his belt, Detroit showed that perhaps he is one to watch out for. I look forward to seeing his next outing.

TIGER STEELE v THE BRIXTON BRAWLER
Obviously not one of the apprentice matches, the big man from Texas was pissed at having lost his World title to P.N. News the previous evening in Norwich, and he made very short work of the Brawler.

Even though he got in some good attacks before the bell, the Brawler was simply overpowered by his much larger opponent. The only way he could gain any sort of advantage over Tiger was by delivering some low blows.

But this match belonged to Tiger. A devastating chokeslam followed by a neck breaker, a the match belonged to the Texan. Not a classic match, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Ladder Match
MINI MICHAELS v JASON HAWKES
A couple of months ago, a Hingham local had promised to put up a £50 prize for these two, if they competed in a ladder match. When that local failed to deliver his promise, it looked like this match wouldn't take place. However, another local, whose name, sadly, I can't recall, put up the money, and the match was on.

In the past I've been critical of these two lads, but by far, this was the best match I've ever seen these two in. The match stipulation added another dimension to their outing, and these two showed that should WAW revive their Youth Championship, then these two must be considered top contenders for that belt.

If I have one criticism here though, is that perhaps Mini Michaels did a little too much showboating. But then again, perhaps I could put that down to youthful exuberance.

There was a lot of action here, so much that it's hard to pin down one particular moment. Both lads used the ladder well, and literally kicked the crap out of each other.

Mini Michaels was the victor this evening. Placing the ladder over Jason's throat, Michaels climbed the ladder and claimed the prize money, and after the bout, even though they had been beating the hell out of each other, they showed their respect. A hell of a match.

ANGEL & KHARISMA v SWEET SARAYA & KATTY KATRINA (with Emma)
Fresh from her World title victory the previous evening, Saraya returned to her evil ways, and introduced us to her two latest protégés, going up against the ever improving duo of Angel and Kharisma.

Saraya started the contest, dominating early on, before tagging in Katrina. The youngster showed great promise, getting in some good moves, and along with Emma, an underhanded double splash in the corner.

Even though they managed to fight back a little, with some good moves from Kharisma, the night belonged to Saraya and Katrina. A schoolboy, or perhaps that should be schoolgirl, roll-up on Kharisma, and the match was over.

A little advice to fans here, and I really hope that you take this to heart, should you be at a TWA, All-Star or WAW show. When you see Saraya, please use this chant; "WE WANT CHICKEN!!"

THE U.K. PATROITS v THE THETFORD CONNECTION v THE DARK ANGELS v "ROWDY" RICKY KNIGHT & TANK
The penultimate match of the evening pitted four teams in an elimination match, and provided some great entertainment for all.

Before the match began, Ricky showed us that he had been teaching his new protégé, the man mountain, Tank, a trick or two. Instead of walloping me in the head himself, Ricky held me back as Tank delivered the punishment. And let me tell you, Tank hits much harder than the Rowdy one.

A contest which was highly enjoyable, pitting some of WAW's more established names against their up and coming young stars, and it was good to see some wrestler you normally wouldn't see against each other go at it. After all, when you think about things, there was only really one heel team in this contest.

Early on, we had some excellent exchanges between the Patriots and the Thetfords, particularly Sam and the Zebra Kid. However, it was Zebra who eliminated the Thetfords after a devastating flying splash.

Zebra Kid would also make the next elimination, with some unlikely help from Ricky Knight. Having dealt with the Dark Angel's Draven, Ricky got the blind tag on Zebra, and flung him into the ring, using the ropes for leverage. Zebra caught Draven with a flying shoulder, and scored the pin. The brought back memories of the Hart Foundation in their prime.

This left the current champions against Ricky and Tank. Zebra and Ricky once again showed the tremendous chemistry they have, and again put on a good show. But let's not forget Hot Stuff here, and Tank, with some great moves from the big man.

But the champions showed their class, with a Zebra Kid stunner dealing with the Rowdy one, and securing the pin. After the bout, Tank showed his mean streak, beating the crap out of Hot Stuff. To say that he was a little annoyed would have been an understatement.

ROYAL RUMBLE
While a rumble is a little bit easier to report on than an ordinary battle royal, it's still damn hard. But this mixture of lads from the current training school, and the previous one in February still provided some great entertainment, with promising newcomer Kaos coming out on top.

In conclusion - a highly enjoyable evening. While the show in Norwich had been a tremendous success, and a show I had really enjoyed, I actually got a bigger buzz from this show. I have watched the men and women who attended the training school in February since the beginning of their careers. Some of them have become very good friends, and to see these people in the ring, taking their next big steps, wasn't just a pleasure, it was an honour. I count myself truly fortunate to have been there that night, and I would like to end in saying that you all did bloody well, and that I'm proud to
have been there that night. I look forward to seeing you all in the ring again.
