Being a Horseman - DVD Review

Have you ever wondered what it was like being a member of the Four Horsemen? Do you want to know what it was like travelling around the country going from show to show? Or if they really spent their time flying in private jets, riding in limos and stealing kisses?

Now’s your chance to find out, because Kayfabe Commentaries have grabbed hold of their legendary manager, J.J. Dillon, to reveal what it was like as part of this infamous group in their DVD release “Being a Horseman”.

With the always dependable Sean Oliver posing the questions Dillon takes us back in time to Monday, 23rd February, 1987 in an attempt to find out what it was like for Ric Flair and his crew.

If you buy this DVD looking for stories of hard partying and salacious encounters in the back seats of limos with busty beauties then you’re going to be very disappointed.

With notebook in hand Dillon tells a tale of travel schedules, private jet and car hire, arriving and departing and arenas, and how producing television shows were a whole lot different than producing spot shows.

Having read that you’re probably thinking that this is one boring DVD, and while this may not be to everyone’s tastes it does make for interesting viewing as J.J. tells the story of what it was like being part of professional wrestling’s premier stable, and what it was like working for Jim Crockett back then as well.

While it makes for interesting viewing it doesn’t actually get much better than that. I’m a big fan of the work Kayfabe Commentaries have done over the years but this doesn’t exactly make for riveting viewing.

My viewing enjoyment wasn’t helped by the off-putting sound effects used. Let me give you an example. When J.J. was talking about what happened in the locker room, a photo of a locker room would appear on the screen, and we’d hear locker room sounds.

Similar things would happen when J.J. spoke of arena and hotel happenings, and it didn’t really add anything to the overall experience.

While Being A Horseman makes for interesting viewing, I’m not sure it’s one I can recommend. J.J. Dillon is a great interview subject, but given his vast tenure in the wrestling business I couldn’t help but think that he’d have been better used for one of the YouShoot or Timeline series.

So with that in mind I’m afraid that this release gets the thumbs down. It’s okay if you’ve got a spare couple of hours to kill, just don’t expect any revelations.
