It’s hard to believe that Ring of Honor has been around for many years now. In that time we’ve seen tremendous matches from the likes of Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, A.J. Styles, C.M. Punk and Colt Cabana, to name but a few. But word has it that because of their television deal the company could be on it’s last legs, and that their match quality has slipped somewhat.
Not so, say I, given what I’ve seen with Motor City Madness 2009. Held this past January in Detroit, this DVD release keeps up the strong tradition of great matches, beginning with the opener which pits “Addicted to Love” Rhett Titus against former champion “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson, through the non-title match involving ROH Champ Nigel McGuinness against Jay Briscoe, through to the main event, which sees “Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen and El Generico defending the ROH tag titles against The American Wolves, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards. This isn’t a collection of five minute, soon-to-be-forgotten knock-off matches. These are twenty minute minor classics. Well, all save Necro Butcher against Brodie Lee. But then again, while the Butcher is apparently something of a cult figure, I’ve never been able to see his appeal.
Ring of Honor continues to be a more than viable alternative to the “big two” as it were. If, as a wrestling fan, you like to actually see wrestlers wrestle, then ROH may be the promotion for you.
Marks:
Main Program: 4 stars. Extras: 3 stars.
