Renegades - Civil War Chapter Thirty-Seven

Finally Jake had managed to calm Nog down. He was now merely annoyed with his uncle rather than furious. Shortly afterwards they arrived back at the camp site to find that something was wrong.
    “Where are they?” Nog asked.
“I don’t know.” Jake replied. “But I know they wouldn’t have left us alone without a good reason!”
They then began calling out for Quark and Sisko in the hope that they might suddenly appear. They did not.
“We’ve got to do something!” said Jake.
“We could wait for them in the runabout!”
Jake stared at his Ferengi friend. He then looked around until he saw what he was looking for - a tri-corder. He picked it up and began to scan the surrounding area.
“Come on! We’ve got to find them!”
    Reluctantly Nog followed.

“Captain, can I see you in your Ready Room?”
Sinclair was somewhat surprised at Alexander’s request. Nevertheless he agreed, leaving Shelby in command, much to the annoyance of Travis. Once the doors closed behind them Alexander spoke.
“Captain, Doctor Magus has contacted me.”
    “How?”
“Telepathically. Something is very wrong here. He relayed information that could see President Servalan locked away for many years!”
    “Information? What information?”
Suddenly the whole ship rocked as another blast hit them. Sinclair and Alexander raced onto the bridge to see Travis shouting at Blake on the Liberator.
“Who gave the order for the Liberator to be contacted?” Sinclair boomed.
“I did.” said Travis. “We are getting nowhere just sitting here!”
“I give the orders around here Commander Travis, and until I am relieved of my command I will continue to do so!”
Sinclair then turned to Alexander with an unusual request.
    “Counsellor, Scan me!”
    “What?”
    “Just do as I say.”
Alexander did as she was told. A few seconds later a smile appeared on her face.
“It might just work! I’ll do it right away!”
    On the Liberator Magus smiled.
“It appears that Captain Sinclair is very resourceful! He has come up with a way out of this situation.”
“A way?” Avon queried. “What sort of way?”
“My dear Mister Avon, the Liberator and the Scotsman are going to be destroyed!”

Connor McCloud arrived at the Attorney General’s office, eager to see Admiral Gregory Quinn. He looked around but could not see him. Instead he pulled up a rather young looking ensign.
“Where is Admiral Quinn?” he asked.
The young woman looked at McCloud as if she knew something he didn’t.
“Haven’t you heard Commodore? Admiral Quinn hasn’t been seen for days! No one can find him!”
“And I suppose you don’t know anything about Leo Rumpole?”
    The ensign shook her head.
“If you hear anything from Admiral Quinn get him to contact me!”
McCloud then left the office, leaving the young ensign wondering what was going on.

Podley looked out of the window of the precinct as the Federation prison ship U.S.S. London arrived in orbit around Altor. Podley was soon joined at his observation point by Orin.
“Sir, Captain Leylan has given the order for the prisoner transfer.”
Podley was deep in thought. He did not reply for a few moments.
“I’m sorry Orin. What was that?”
“Captain Leylan is ready for the transfer.”
    “And what about the Valkyrie?”
“The Valkyrie is being placed under the temporary command of his first officer, Commander Raiker.”
“Which means she’ll probably end up in orbit around Qualor II, along with the piles of junk there! Okay Orin, start the transfer.”
The prisoner transfer took place without any major incident, until it was time for  Watt and Sutek to be transferred to the London. All of the officers began to gather, and Podley made eye contact with Watt as he boarded the London.
The prison ship was soon on it’s way to Earth, shortly followed by the Valkyrie. Once again Podley had taken up his observation point. Shortly afterwards he was joined by Brogan.
“I never thought I’d live to see this.” he said. “One of Starfleet’s finest being taken away like a common criminal!”
“Damn it Brogan!” Podley snapped. “Something’s not right here! I want you and Haldane to go through this whole case with a fine toothpick. I want no stone left unturned! Something’s wrong here, and I want to know what!”

As the transporter beam died down Magus raced into the Engineering section. There he found Scotty and Gomez working busily on the warp engines, preparing for the expected quick getaway.
“Scotty, do you remember when we had to get away from the Enterprise we used the cavourite drive? Would it be possible to extend the cavourite field around the Liberator so we could transport it away at the same time, making it seem like the Lohengrin destroyed us?”
    Scotty shook his head.
“I don’t think it can work! The energy drain on the cavourite drive would be massive! I don’t see how you can do it!”
“We must find a way Mister Scott! If we are to get out of this thing in one piece!”
Magus then raced onto the Bridge where he was greeted by Pendragon. Magus soon relayed the idea to him and the rest of the Bridge crew.
“There will be a very small margin for error.” said Pendragon.
“Agreed.” said Drathro. “We would also have to deposit debris so it would look like we were destroyed!”
“Let me handle that!” said Magus. “Drathro, I’d like you to work with Mister Scott. You understand the time travel technology we’ll be using.”
On the Lohengrin Xon busily worked the ship’s computer, accessing the Liberator’s files on Servalan’s corruption and planting them deep into the computer so only authorised personnel could find them. Alexander watched as once again she was in telepathic contact with Magus. She then turned to Sinclair.
    “Everything is ready.” she whispered.
    “Good.”
Sinclair then raced back to the centre chair and seated himself next to Travis, who had taken Alexander’s position.
“Commander Travis, I’m beginning to think you were right about this entire situation.”
Travis Smiled. Could Sinclair be coming around to his point of view at last?
“Mister Tarses, open a channel to the Liberator and the Flying Scotsman.”
Tarses did as he was ordered.
“This is Captain Sinclair of the U.S.S. Lohengrin. The time for playing games is over gentlemen. Either surrender peacefully or I’ll blow you both to kingdom come!”
The image of Roj Blake appeared on the view screen.
“Not in a million years Captain!”
“Then so be it! Mister Tarses, arm all weapons and target the engines of both the Liberator and the Scotsman!”
“But Captain, we won’t have enough power!”
    “I don’t care, do it!”
“You’ve made a wise choice Captain.” said Travis. “If you pull this off you’ll be considered a hero and will be duly awarded!”
Things began to get tense on the other ships.
“All weapons on the Lohengrin are being  armed.” Zen reported.
“Make it look like we are suffering from a power drain.” Blake ordered. “Then drop the force wall to allow the cavourite field to envelop us.”
“Captain, the Liberator is suffering from some sort of power loss.” Xon reported. “Sensors report that the Scotsman is trying to extend their shields around them, but it is causing a strain on their engines.”
    Sinclair turned to Travis.
“This is your hunt Commander. You can give the order!”
Feeling the air of authority go to his head Travis got to his feet and approached the main viewer.
    “Mister Tarses….fire!”
The burst of phaser energy and photo torpedoes shot out of the Lohengrin’s weapons banks and first hit the Liberator and then the Scotsman.
“I’m showing power losses in both ships.” Tarses reported. “Both have sustained a massive amount of damage. Both warp cores have been breached! They’re going to…”
Before Tarses could finish his sentence both the Liberator and the Scotsman exploded into clouds of dust.
“I am scanning the area.” said Xon. “The debris seems to be from both the Liberator and the Flying Scotsman. They’ve both been destroyed! All lives lost.”
“Congratulations Mister Travis.” said Sinclair. “It appears that you have succeeded in your mission.”
“Then there is nothing left for us here.” said Travis.
“Very well. Mister Riker, set a course for Starbase Seventeen, ahead warp factor four. Mister Tarses, contact Starfleet Command and tell them we have succeeded in our mission.”
Sinclair sat back in his chair smiling smugly to himself. Shelby looked over at him as if she could tell that all was not as it seems.

A massive cavourite energy surge appeared in the adjoining sector, and seconds later the Liberator and the U.S.S. Flying Scotsman appeared. Magus looked around and saw that everyone was alright.
“Reports coming in from all decks.” Winthorn reported. “No damage, no casualties.”
    “And the Liberator?” asked Pendragon.
    “Same there.” Winthorn replied.
“Open a channel to the Liberator.”
The image of Blake and Avon soon appeared before them.
“Commander Blake, it appears that our ruse has worked.”
“So it would seem.” Blake replied. “Perhaps now is a good time to say goodbye.”
“I don’t think so Commander. You see, we both carry with us something that could stop Servalan in her tracks. Something that could bring her little empire toppling down.”
    “What are you suggesting?”
“Return with us to the Time of Legends. Under the Pegasus declaration you would be protected under the laws of the Time.”
“I don’t think that would be a good idea.” said Avon. “We have our own agenda!”
“We would work better as a team.” said Blake. “If others were made aware of the situation Servalan could be forced from office. Very well, we’ll go with you.”
The communication ended. Magus then turned to Pendragon.
“Captain, I believe you know the coordinates for the Pegasus station.”
Pendragon was about to give the order when Greenleaf interrupted him.
“Captain, I’m picking up a transmission from the Altor system. This must be some mistake. It says that Captain Watt and the rest of the Valkyrie crew have been taken into custody aboard the U.S.S. London and are being taken back to Earth, where they will await trial.”
“Trial?” said Magus. “On what charge?”
“For aiding in the escape of Roj Blake and his comrades.” Greenleaf replied.
Magus slumped back into the science officer’s chair as if he’d been hit by a ton of bricks. First his best friend had been killed, and now the man who was like a grandson to him had been declared a common criminal. What could happen next?
