The Frankenstein Factor - Civil War Chapter Four

The creature stood motionless for a few minutes, as if it were trying to take in it’s surroundings.
    “What’s it doing?” asked Franklin.
Frankenstein did not reply. All he could do was look at his creation. Then the creature lurched forward, not towards either of the doctors but towards Frankenstein’s assistant. The small man could not move fast enough. The creature managed to grab hold of him, a huge hand gripping him around his neck. Then, with just one clench, he squeezed the life out of his body. He then dropped him like he was a piece of rubbish. He then looked at Franklin and Frankenstein, but instead of attacking them he went to the door he had scrapped earlier and moved into the corridor.

The power levels were still drastically low. Almost every major system had been affected by Frankenstein’s machines. Sinclair and Ivanova still tried to compensate, but they couldn’t.
“I can’t do anything!” said Ivanova. “It’s as if the fusion reactor has gone offline!”
“Do we have power to the internal sensors?” asked Sinclair.
    Ivanova checked the control panel.
“Not enough to track that thing, whatever it is!”
    Sinclair activated his communicator.
“Sinclair to Garibaldi. The internal sensors are down! You’re going to have to go blind on this one!”
“That’s the last thing we need! From what Doctor Franklin said this is one helluva monster!”
The security team that Garibaldi was leading suddenly came to a dead stop as they heard a low growling noise from the corridor in front of them.
    “What was that?” he said.
He soon got his answer as the creature came into view. It was massive.
“From the size of that thing we don’t need the sensors to track it!”
The security team took up their firing stances. Garibaldi gave the order, and phaser fire shot towards the creature. Several blasts hit it, while several more missed. It wouldn’t have mattered if they had all hit because the blasts that hit the creature had no effect on it.
“What does it take to cut this thing down?”
The creature then showed increased speed as he cut through the security team like a hot knife through butter. He tossed them around like rag dolls. Only a few of them managed to survive unscathed. Garibaldi was not one of those, a blow from the creature winding him. He could only watch as the creature moved down the corridor. As it disappeared around a corner Franklin and Frankenstein appeared from the opposite direction. While Franklin stopped to tend to the injured Frankenstein followed his creation.
    “What…is…that…thing?” gasped Garibaldi.
“The creation of a mad man!”
    Franklin activated his communicator.
“Franklin to Sinclair. Garibaldi and his team are down. The creature walked straight through them.”
    Garibaldi grabbed Franklin’s collar.
    “Phaser fire…doesn’t…affect it!”
“This creature was created by Frankenstein, wasn’t it?” asked Sinclair.
“Yes.” replied Franklin. “But I don’t know if it has any weaknesses!”
“There may be one!” said Sinclair. “If the old legends are true, that is!”
In Ops Sinclair turned to Ivanova.
“Commander, I want you to follow my orders to the letter. I want no one to follow me while I go after that thing. If you don’t hear anything from me in thirty minutes then try to locate the creature and send a team in.”
“Are you mad? You don’t know what you’re doing!”
“I do! And disable the fire control system as well. This plan will only work if they are disabled!”
“With this power loss I doubt if they’re working anyway!”
Sinclair then left Ivanova at her station. She noticed that Sinclair did not go to the weapons locker.
    “Commander, you’ll need a phaser!”
It was as if Sinclair did not hear what she said. He left the room like a man with a plan.
Frankenstein had only just managed to keep up with the creature. He was about to catch up- with him when he saw Sinclair approaching in the opposite direction. He noticed that Sinclair had some sort of blowtorch in his left hand. The creature stopped when he saw the commander, obviously seeing Sinclair as his next victim. However, then the creature moved a few steps closer Sinclair ignited the blowtorch. Flames started to erupt from it’s nozzle. This seemed to startle the creature.
“Looks like you have the same fear as your predecessor.” said Sinclair. “Let’s see if it’s exactly the same!”
And with that Sinclair turned up the heat and pointed it in the direction of the creature. The heat was getting unbearable for it. It raised it’s arms in an attempt to protect it’s face. It was obvious the creature was scared.
From his vantage point Frankenstein could tell that things were turning against his creature. He knew that he had to do something to protect his “son” and has he knew the layout of the station he knew of a way that they could escape. Frankenstein called out to the creature. Turning away from Sinclair the creature looked at Frankenstein. It seemed to trust him, as a son would trust his father, because in a way that was what Frankenstein was to the creature. The creature then started to move away form Sinclair and towards it’s creator. When he saw this happening Sinclair turned off his blowtorch. He then followed the two of them down the corridor, but was surprised when both Frankenstein and his creature moved too quickly for him to keep up with.
This chase took both parties down several corridors. To Sinclair it was as if Frankenstein knew the station like the back of his hand, and in a way Frankenstein did, having studied the schematics of the station for months so he could find an isolated placed to carry out his work. Then Frankenstein and the creature stopped. Sinclair recognised the area they were now in, it was where the escape pods were kept. Frankenstein began to operate one of the control panels. Sinclair now wished he had a phaser with him. At least if he’d been able to fire a warning shot it might have been able to stop Frankenstein. Still, all he could do was call out to the doctor. This had no effect. He then activated his communicator.
“Sinclair to Ops. Shut down all the power to the escape pods, now!”
“I can’t!” Ivanova replied. “The shutdown systems are also affected by the power loss. I can’t do anything!”
It was too late. Seconds later Frankenstein and his creation were in the escape pod and away from the station.
A few minutes later Sinclair raced into the fighter bay. It was there he found Lieutenant Keffer.
“Warren, I want you to launch a squadron after that escape pod!”
“I can’t Commander! The power is down all over the station. I can only launch one fighter!”
    Sinclair though quickly.
“Very well. Get it ready. I’ll take it out!”
Sinclair was soon suited up and seated in the fighter cockpit. After launching it  didn’t take him long to find the escape pod. It was flying near  the atmosphere of Epsilon 3. Sinclair opened up a channel to the pod.
“Doctor Frankenstein, this is Commander Sinclair. Alter the course of the pod and return to the station or I will open fire!”
There was no reply. Sinclair tried calling the pod again but he got the same response - nothing. It was then he made the decision. Powering up the weapons he opened fire. He had intended to fire just a warning shot but the pod turned and got caught in the fire. There was a direct hit on the pod’s engines. Flames began to billow out as the pod started to enter the atmosphere of Epsilon 3. Sinclair flew towards the pod and unleashed the fighter’s grappling hook but couldn’t get a lock on the pod, so he couldn’t tow it back to the station. Instead all he could do was watch as the pod entered the atmosphere. A few seconds later the sensors told Sinclair that there was an explosion on the surface. He was about to turn the fighter into the planet’s atmosphere when his fuel gauge started to beep on him. It look as if the fighter wasn’t fully fuelled when he took off. He had to return to the station otherwise he would start to drift in space.
