The Madness Returns - Chapter One

The last thought, the last sentient thought, that had passed through the mind of Woodwose was why? Up until recently he had been a refugee from a distant planet, driven out of his home, off his planet by the tyrant known only as the High Wolfman. Even then, when he had made a home on Earth and found friends in humans was his safety at risk from his own kind. Colonel Chaney had come across the galaxy seeking revenge on his old enemy, driving him insane, causing pain and destruction wherever he went. Still, even after the Q had cured him of his madness all was not right. Freed by the disgraced General Billiar the madness returned after an encounter with one Armand Theophilus.
Now his every waking thought consisted of one thing, rage. Pure, primal, animal rage. The madness had reverted Woodwose back to his animal instincts. All intelligent thoughts were gone. He lived on animal instincts alone. He had no memories of his previous life. His only memories were those of his last fight against a man who didn’t look like he would have a chance against this mighty man-beast. This man stood more than a chance against the mighty Woodwose. He matched him power for pure raw power. This man had captured Woodwose after an epic battle. Now Woodwose, free, away from the cage he had been kept in after he was captured, now had the chance for revenge, revenge against the human who had beaten him, and revenge against those who had tried to stop him before.

As Phineas Magus entered the study of James Watt at the Anglo-Force mansion he found his protégé staring out of the window onto the lavish grounds that surrounded the Anglo-Force property. Watt was deep in thought, thinking about all that had occurred recently. The destruction of the Cyberdine planet causing outrage in the House of Commons, the so-called job offer from Giovanni DiMambro, and Jet returning to the fold on a part-time basis. Now Watt’s thoughts turned to what could happen. Already there was talk of Anglo-Force being disbanded. This was nothing new. All of this had happened before, after Watt had received a visitor from the future.
Magus did not want to disturb Watt, but he had to.
“James?” Magus said. “The meeting is about to start. Simon Kennedy is also here to sit in on the meeting.”
There was a pause of a few seconds before Watt replied.
“I’ll be along in a few moments.”
Magus could tell something was wrong with Watt, but he knew that Watt had to be left alone. He knew Watt needed his own space, and that if he wanted Magus’ help he would come to him.

Dentonville Prison. Woodwose knew the smell of this place. He knew it well. The memory began to come back to him. It was a hazy memory, a memory of being constantly tired, of not being able to move because of his fatigue. He felt nothing but anger as this memory came back to him. The people inside this place had hurt him, had wanted to confine him in a cage, to keep him locked away, away from the man who had put him there in the first place. This seemed like the best place to start, to start his quest for revenge.

It was the early hours of the morning, and the meeting at the mansion had concluded hours earlier. Normally after these meetings had finished Simon Kennedy would return to his London home. This time however he stayed behind, sitting in front of a roaring log fire with his old friend James Watt.
“This thing really is getting you down, isn’t it?” asked Kennedy.
“What the hell do you think?” Watt replied. “I could be sued for millions! What am I supposed to do? How does Arthur explain this, should it ever come to trial? ‘My client defended the lives of millions who have not been born yet.’ They’ll laugh us out of court and send us to Dentonville!”
“Hopefully it won’t come to that.” said Kennedy. “Ever since I entered the Commons I’ve gained many allies. Just this morning Guthrie Featherstone was saying how he would lend his support to you, and you know how much weight he carries these days!”
“But what about your esteemed leader?”
“Neil Smith I’m not too sure about. He’s been very silent on this matter for some reason. It’s not normally like him. The opposition, Simon Harkes in particular, has been very vocal in his views against you!”
“The two-faced git! He was the one who got us funding in the first place!”
“I know! Anyway, I’m afraid I’ll have to go now. Chris is probably waiting up for me. He keeps wanting Magus to reform his Warriors group. But with Thomas away on the Time of Legends it probably won’t be the same!”
Kennedy then got to his feet. Watt was surprised with the ease he stood up, considering he suffered a broken back not long ago.
“The therapy seems to be working then!” said Watt.
“Maybe someday I’ll be able to come back as Mister X! Give that X fellow a run for his money, even though he hasn’t been seen in a while!”
Kennedy was soon on his way back to London. As Watt watched him drive off his thoughts returned to their discussion. He hoped Arthur Pendragon could pull another rabbit out of his legal hat.
