WAW One Night in Yarmouth - DVD Review

It’s taken a while, but WAW, in conjunction with CDC Productions, the company responsible for the FWA and UK Round-Up shows on The Wrestling Channel, have finally released One Night In Yarmouth on DVD, filmed during WAW’s series of successful shows at the Atlantis Arena in Great Yarmouth last August.

We start with a bout that was featured on UK Round-Up, as Frankie Sloan takes on Hot Stuff. This was actually one of Hot Stuff’s final outings before his retirement, and when it was shown on The Wrestling Channel, his hip-swinging antics didn’t go down too well with the smart marks. The crotch-grabbing aside, what you’ve got here is a good opener between two vastly experienced wrestlers, looking better in it’s unedited form, with Hot Stuff getting the win with a sunset flip out of the corner.

Next up, it’s a battle of the Steves, as Cruiserweight champ Steve Quintain takes on UWA guy Steve Morocco in a non-title match. Fought over six three minute rounds, an old school kind of bout with some good technical stuff from both men, although Morocco tries to break the rules whenever possible. It helps him pick up the win, though he reverses Quintain’s monkey flip attempt and pins him with his feet on the ropes. Afterwards Morocco demands a shot at Quintain’s title, which the champion agrees to.

Six women tag action next, as Erin Angel, Ashley Paige & Destiny take on Sweet Saraya, Nikki Best & Lisa Fury. Wrestling over three falls, the action is hard-hitting & fast-paced at times, with Saraya, Lisa & Nikki breaking the rules every opportunity they get. With the score one apiece, Ashley Paige gets the win for her team, pinning Saraya after a moonsault. Afterwards, Saraya refuses to give Ashley a title shot, but Commissioner Steven Howard-Platt grants Ashley’s request.

Next up, it’s Atlantis Cup first round action, as two of Britain’s top youngsters, Zak Zodiac and Flaming Red go at it. The action is fast paced in this one, as neither of the young ‘uns hold anything back in what was one of the best bouts from last year’s tournament. Zodiac came out on top, finishing Red off here with a top rope splash.

Following this, former WWF star Jake “The Snake” Roberts takes on Phil Powers. These two had been doing the rounds all over Britain in 2004. Powers literally hammers Roberts all over the arena, and when it looks like he was going down for the count, the Snake Man takes Powers out with a DDT, and it was only the interference & attack of the U.K. Pitbulls that stopped Roberts from getting the pinfall victory, the interference earning Powers a disqualification.

Finally, as previously seen on TWC, although in a heavily edited format, the Zebra Kid defends his British Heavyweight title against Paul Tyrell, in one of the first bouts fought under the WAW championship rules. Those who didn’t attend this show will see that UK Round-Up didn’t do this match justice. After what seems like an eternity of great action, & with the scores one apiece, both men are counted out while brawling on the outside, as the match ends in a draw. A great match here, and a good example of the WAW championship match rules in action.

In conclusion - this show brings back some great memories of a great summer of wrestling action. This show was probably the best of WAW’s season in Yarmouth, which means that they have a lot to live up to when this year’s shows begin in July. My only criticism of this DVD is the lack of commentary, and the fact that a certain judge didn’t even warrant a close-up or even a caption when he was introduced prior to the championship match! Good stuff nonetheless.
