RE-POST: WAW Top 10 Matches of 2004

As promised, it's the final part of my End of Year trilogy, and in this edition I will list my Top Ten WAW Matches for 2004. Here we go.....

10) SWEET SARAYA, "NAUGHTY" NIKKI BEST & LISA FURY v DESTINY, ERIN ANGEL &
ASHLEY PAIGE
"Summer Sizzler 2004", Atlantis Arena, Great Yarmouth, August.
This is a match you're not likely to see again soon, with six of the top female wrestlers in Britain competing in the same match. Possibly the best woman's match in Britain this year, with the team of Destiny, Angel and Paige defeating their rivals after two falls to one, the winning fall coming after Paige pinned Saraya following her moonsault.

9) "THE DARK ANGEL" ASHE v ZAK ZODIAC
"The War of 2004", The Talk, Norwich, September.
The opening match of WAW's 10th anniversary show, Ashe, as Ricky Knight did a few weeks later, underestimated his younger opponent, clearly forgetting his previous match with Zodiac in the semi-finals of the Atlantis Cup a few weeks earlier. Zodiac showed just how far he's progressed in 2004, by taking the champion to the limit before Ashe eventually emerged victorious.

8) "ROWDY" RICKY KNIGHT v ZAK ZODIAC
"Battle of the Champions", Waveney Sports & Leisure Centre, Lowestoft, October. With Commissioner Steven Howard-Platt away on business, Knight moved himself into a number one contenders match, seeing Zak Zodiac as easy pickings, but the youngster was far from being a push over, emerging victorious over the veteran and earning a title shot at the British Champion.

7) THE ZEBRA KID v PAUL TYRELL
WAW British Heavyweight Championship,
"Summer Sizzler 2004", Atlantis Arena, Great Yarmouth, August.
The premier show of the summer saw two of Britain's top stars compete for the hold in a match that was later broadcast on The Wrestling Channel. A perfect example of the new championship match rules which saw the belt held up by Commissioner Steven Howard-Platt after both wrestlers were counted out.

6) THE SUPERFLYS v "THE SHOWSTEALER" ALEX SHANE & AVIV MAYAAN
"The War of 2004", The Talk, Norwich, September.
Billed as Team WAW v Team FWA, the veteran team of Knight & Ocean had their work cut out for them against the Showstealer and the promising rookie. The contest was pretty even until the Superflys' fellow WAW stars stormed the ring, bringing out the monster Burchill, who proceeded to clean house.

5) "THE DARK ANGEL" ASHE v THE KRAFT
Atlantis Cup Final, Atlantis Arena, Great Yarmouth, August.
The culmination of the month long summer tournament saw two of WAW's rising young stars go at it full throttle with The Kraft defeating Ashe to win the cup just a few days after Ashe had won the British title.

4) THE U.K. PITBULLS v BASH & THE KRAFT
WAW Tag-Team Championship,
"Battle of the Champions", Waveney Sports & Leisure Centre, Lowestoft, October.
When it looked like there wasn't a team good enough to challenge the Pitbulls for the title, Bash and The Kraft stepped forward to give Big Dave and The Bulk possibly their toughest challenge in years, and it looked like new champions would be crowned until Bash showed his true colours and turned on his partner.

3) THE ZEBRA KID v "THE DARK ANGEL" ASHE
WAW British Heavyweight Championship,
Hunstanton Town Hall, August.
The hometown hero emerged truimphant here as Ashe won the British title after the Zebra Kid's attempt to feign injury and retain the title backfired when the referee referred the decision to the judges and they awarded Ashe the title. A great title match which left many fans eagerly awaiting the rematch.

2) "GENTLEMAN" JIMMY OCEAN v "THE WONDERKID" JONNY STORM
Atlantis Arena, Great Yarmouth, August.
This match was almost two years in the making and for many was a battle of the generations, as former British Lightweight Champion Ocean fought against his modern-day counterpart Storm. A classice wrestling bout with Storm coming out on top.

1) "ROWDY" RICKY KNIGHT v PAUL TYRELL
Tables, Ladders & Chairs,
Atlantis Arena, Great Yarmouth, August.
Although hard-core wrestling isn't exactly in vogue at the moment, Knight and Tyrell showed just how it should be done with this great bout during the summer season, which Tyrell eventually won after some interference from his UWA running buddy Steve Morocco. A great, hard-hitting bout, and definitely worthy of the number one sport.

Well, that brings us to the end of The End of Year Trilogy, and to the end of 2004. It's been a great year for WAW, and personally, I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone connected with the company, and everyone I've met during my travels around the British wrestling circuitthis year, for making it a great year. Let's see if we can make 2005 an even better one!
